I am descended from James Murray born ca 1760 via Philip his son [or grandson] born ca 1814 .James was in the 5th Dragoons & lived on the Portumna Road. I believe James also had a son James born ca 1806 who served in Ceylon [now Sri Lanka] in the 61st Regiment; a daughter Judith born ca 1811 who married Michael Hogan & a son Daniel born ca 1816 who like Philip joined the 87th Regimnent; they both served in India. Is there anyone else out there who has this James in their tree? Thanks.

Good morning,
Apologies for delay in replying we are having a little difficulty with the Hogan surname as there were and still so many with the Hogan surname in the parish so could I ask if you are aware of any other male members of the family who may have stayed in the area, we are aware of a Murray family who may have a link but that is due to a geographical location rather than definite evidence.
We note that at least one of the Murray members of the military remained in England and are listed as Chelsea pensioners in the mid 1840 but that does not further your search in Ireland for relatives.
Will keep following up on this and if you have any of above info it might be useful
Regards

Thank you for that. Sorry for this long reply but I hope it helps. There are no burials in the online parish records at nli.ie.& I do not have a subs to rootsireland so I do not have death dates. I have made 6 points below.
[1] Judith and Michael Hogan had the following children Mary 1834, James 1836, Margaret 1839. I have not been able to find a marriage of a James Hogan with father Michael. I found a possible marraige for Mary
TIMOTHY CORCORAN bach road contractor Kernulty
MARY HOGAN spin full age of Borrisokane d-o Michael labourer
31 July 1864
Group Registration ID 3028671
SR District/Reg Area Borrisokane
witnesses John Hogan, Margaret Hogan [could be sister] , all 4 made markand one possible for Margaret
1867 23 Feb of Margaret of Ballyrickard d-o Michael farmer m Philip Quin farmer witnesses Philip Hough [?] & Maria Hogan [possible sister] only Philip Quin signed.
Possible death for Judith but I have not yet sent off for certificate.
Date of Death 1877
Group Registration ID N/R
SR District/Reg Area Borrisokane
Deceased Age at Death 56 [is this right? 66 would be more likely]
1877/3/13/259[2] I found the following documents at NAI & have commissioned copies to be made by a private researcher as I received no reply directly from NAI; she will report in early August 2021. I am hoping James named his sons in these letters.
2.1 Memorial of James Murray, formerly of the 5th Dragoon Guards, Borrisokane, County Tipperary, calling for the appointment of his second son to the water guard service.
Reference:CSO/RP/1834/4606 Date:27 Nov 1834
Memorial of James Murray, formerly of the 5th Dragoon Guards, Borrisokane, County Tipperary, to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, calling for the appointment of his second son to the water guard service; describing himself as an ‘old soldier’ of 28 years’ service, he notes that his elder son is also serving the crown in the 61st Regiment of Foot in Ceylon [Sri Lanka]. Also damp press copy reply from Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Gosset, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle.Extent:2 items; 4ppReference: WO 12/71162.2 File of documents concerning an application from Murray for appointment of his son to the police constabulary of County Tipperary.
Reference: CSO/RP/1834/906
Date: c1 Jan 1834-26 Feb 1834
File of documents concerning an application from Murray for appointment of his son to the police constabulary of County Tipperary. Includesletter from Maj William Miller, [Inspector General of Police in Munster], Cork,[County Cork], to Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Gosset, Under Secretary, stating that he cannot accede to a request for the appointment to the police of the son of James Murray, late of the 5th Dragoons, on account of his ‘being a married man’.[3] I do know there was a Philip Murray in Upperchurch but although probably related is not my direct Murray family.
[4] A James Murray gave evidence at a trial in 1829 for the murder of a Michael Hogan in Borrisokane; James said he had been in the 5th Dragoon Guards or 2nd Horse. Also witness Mary Murray lived on Portumna Road. She had a 'baby in her arms belonging to her daughter' so she was not a Murray herself originally & daughter would not now be a Murray. 2 injured men taken to Murray's house. I do not know if the murdered man was the father of Michael husband of Judith.
[5] In Griffiths Valuation, I don't know the date. there are:
5.1 Hogan Judith Shesheraghmore Borrisokane Tipperary
Hogan Michael Shesheraghmore Borrisokane Tipperarywho may be Philip's sister & brother in law.
5.2 Tithe applotment for Killeen Tithe applotments found for Killeen ca 1825 & 1833, plot 118 Philip Murray, but this 1814 Philip surely too young to be tenant then, 1 acre [Michael Hogan, poss husband or father in law of Judith Murray, Philip's sister, in plot 120]. Also a Jas Murray in Killeen no plot number with 5 acres
[6] I think Daniel Murray died in India in 1857 while serving in the 87th Regiment.
Thank you agsain for your interest.

Brief update, found birth of James Hogan to Michael and Judith Murray on Roots 1 May 1936 with one sponser named Phil Murray wonder is he a brother
Unable to locate birth of Mary or Margaret.
The Margaret Hogan who married Phillip Quin has an address in Cloughjordan which given the little social movement at the time is unlikely to be same family
Found a marraige for a Mary Hogan with father Michael in Borrisokane in 1878 to a John Henry but she would be 44 at that stage so unless the Quin name figures in the family would be inclined to discount
Apologies nothing of help but will persist
Regards
Bill

Could I ask what researcher you are using for your records.

I am only using a local researcher to get copies of the items at NA in Dublin, I have done all of the research myself. I Have no problem telling you who it is but am wary of putting her name on a public forum. Is there any way we can personal messages / email addresses off forum?

Hi Pavonia
it is indeed possible that the Judith and Michael Hogan shown in Griffiths Valuation in Shesheraghmore Borrisokane scould be your family as this survey was taken countrywide between 1848 and 1864 this area is now part of the town of Borrisokane
I note from your list of Hogan births that an Ellen Feenane is a sponser at the birth of Mary and what intrests me in this is the fact that that surname also occurs in my own family, in my case it is a Jane Feenane from Cappenesmare which would be in the general Portumna Road area and there are two Ellen Feenane in the family one born 1819 and the other 1854 from that area
I mention this as it is far easier to pin down an unusual name to an area rather than locate a Hogan of which there were many and my own Mum was Hogan from Terryglass.

Bill
