Looking for info on McFadyen/ McFadden/ McFadion from Donegal.

John McFadyen married Susannah Shields

Children

Bridget  b1794 married Samuel Gray

Anthony b1801 married Julia (Siles) McRora

John b1806 married Ann Mccallum or McAllion

John and Ann's third child Susannah was born abt 1836, Miltown, Donegal.

All three, Bridget, Anthony and John and families are in Glasgow,  from 1830's onward.

The name McFadyen appears in a variety of spellings, with McFadden running through all three lines (mostly male), Fadion, McFadzean (in Ayrshire), McPhadyen, McFayden.

My mother said the family had come from Scotland originally but Susannah, born abt 1836, Miltown, Donegal is the only lead I have as to parish.

Any info or next step advice

would be appreciated

Thanks

  • Hi Janette

My 3 x Great Grandmother, Ann McFadyen, married James Sherry in 1830 in Barony, Glasgow and both said they were from County Tyrone but I can't decipher the parishes (I posted a message a few days ago and someone has made suggestions - Aghaloo for James and Urney for Ann). At the time of the marriage they were residing in Anderston, Glasgow.Their first child (or the first child I have found) was born in Liverpool, Lancashire, England in 1832 so the family must have moved from Scotland sometime between 1830 and 1832.

Ann was not very consistent regarding her age but would have been born sometime between 1803 and 1813. Various spellings have been used for her name including McFadyen, McFadden, McFaden, McPhallion, McFagin,. The English census returns of 1851 and 1861 record that Ann was born in Scotland, however the 1841 census return and her marriage entry (attached) state that she was born in Ireland. To add to the confusion she is referred to as Ann, Nancy and Nanny!

Is it possible that she is a child of John McFadyen and Sussannah Shields? Have you come across any possible baptisms for siblings of Bridget, Anthony and John who may be Ann?

I have had my DNA tested and the results suggest I am 25% Scottish, however to date I have not found any other ancestors who originate from Scotland, despite building an extensive tree and it would therefore seem that my link to Scotland is through Ann.

If we could help each other that would be great, any information you could provide would be appreciated.

    Many thanks

    Chris

  • Hi Chris,

I found  on John's parents, John and Susannah, on his death certificate in 1862.

Bridget I found by happenstance. My mother knew which graveyard she was in and someone was  transcribing it when I was in the library, abt 20 years ago, so I looked for person with similar age. and found her and two grandchildren.

Anthony along with his wife  I found as sponser on baptism records for an Anthony, son of Bridget, as the name was not a familiar one in the family.

Did you look for baptisms in Scotland ?

I have DNA on LivingDNA. Are you on there?

  • Hi Janette

Sorry for the delay in replying. Thanks for the info on John's baptism, I hadn't found this so another piece of the jigsaw.

My DNA is on Ancestry but will try and upload on Living DNA to see if we have a connection
