Hi,  I am having trouble linking family members named Dorgan in U. S. record to Irish records.  Does anyone know if the family name of Dorgan was recorded in Ireland as something else.  I believe they family was from County Cork.  I have tried the obvious spelling variants: Dorgan, Dorgan, etc.  Thanks, Bob

  • Bob:

This link https://www.swilson.info/sdist.php  takes you to a site maintained by one of our volunteers and shows where surnames were found by county in the mid 1800s based on Griffiths Valuation data. The surname Dorgan was primarily found in Co. Cork.

Please share the information on your families and we will see what we can find. Looking at the Griffiths, the surname was found mostly in two civil parishes in East Cork-- Ardnageehy and Dunbulloge but your family could have been from another parish.

    Let us know.

  • Hi, I have the name Dorgan in my family. Nora Dorgan married Dennis Whelan & emigrated to the U.S.A. The Dorgan family originated from Mitchelstown in Co.Cork but moved to Newcastle England where Nora met & married my uncle. If this is the same Drgan family you are researching I do have information on them.

  •  Hi Anthony,

Thank you for offering  to help me with my Dorgan question.
I have traced back this branch of what I believe is my family to a Hanora Dorgan who married a Patrick Donovan on 29 Apr 1869 in Cork City.  I have found the church record of this marriage in irishgeneology.ie and it has a paragraph after it that is in Latin that I have not been able to translate.  I believe it is a dispensation for a marriage bwteeen cousins.  The paragraph may show the family history of each back to a common ancestor, but again I have not been able to make sense of it.
Jeremiah and Honora had a son Jeremiah born 1874 in Cork City who immigrated to Chelsea, Massachusetts marriaged a Mary Cronin in 1895 there and had a daughter named Bertha Rose in Chelsea in 1900.
I know it is a long shot, but if any of the above matches your family tree knowing your family tree would be of great help to me.
    Thanks again,

  • Perhaps our Dorgans are related?

Patrick (Patritius) Dorgan was born on November 20, 1851, in Clonakilty, Cork, Ireland. His baptism certificate lists Lamb Street as the residence. His father was Charles Richard Dorgan (1812-1871) and his mother was Catherine Cushin (1812-1864). Sponsors were William Hegarty and Mary Sexton. Patrick Dorgan's siblings were William, John Maurice, Catherine, Joan, Honora (born 1848), and Mary. Charles Richard Dorgan’s father was William (born abt 1790). Charles Richard had one brother of which I’m aware named John Dorgan/Dargan (born 1810: Sponsors John Dorgan and Jane Shea). Patrick married Kate Donovan on April 5, 1874, in Clonakilty. Witnesses were John and Ellen Donovan.

Kate Donovan was born in April in 1856 (according to her headstone) or 1854 (according to her baptism certificate). Kate was the child of John Donovan and Cath Lyne. Siblings included Mary, Ellen, Honora, Cornelius and Randals.

Patrick and Kate had 12 children in 19 years. Charles Vincent (1875-1918), Catherine (1876-1894), Daniel (1877-1906), William (1879-1927), Patrick (1881-1967), Mary Ellen (My great grandmother) (1882-1961), Julia Ann (1886-1960), Michael J. Dorgan 1888-1978), Thomas Dorgan (1890-1977), Robert (1891-1978), Honora (Nora)(1894-1950). Ten of the children emigrated to the US. At least one son via Canada, but the rest to Boston after Patrick’s death. He died in 1903 and is buried in the pre-famine cemetery in Clonakilty, two of his sons, Robert and Michael, returned to place a headstone in his memory. The inscription reads; “

“In loving memory of Patrick Dorgan Clonakilty, died 21 April 1903, His daughter Catherine died 15 Nov 1834 and his son Daniel died 28th August 1906. “

A later Dorgan-Donavan connection: Patrick’s daughter Nora emigrated to Boston about 1913 and married John Donovan in 1918.

If you make a connection- I have more information and photos. I have the name as Dorgan and Dargan. Also- somehow- Kate Donovan Dorgan is related to JT Donovan who was an MP, among other things.

  • Take a look at my DORGAN family website. This branch of DORGAN is from East County Cork, especially Cloyne and surrounding townlands.
