Hello/Dia Duit. I'm helping a friend of mine do his family history. For years, he thought his family was from Galway, but we recently found documents which showed that the family came from Cork. (Iontas!) Here's the information we do have:
Great-great grandfather: Jeremiah Andrew MADDEN b. 28 Jan 1840 Cork, Ireland m. 6 Nov 1859 Boston Margaret McCARTY d. 16 Sept 1893 Somerville, Massachusetts Great-Great great grandfather: Patrick MADDEN b. Abt 1811 Cork, Ireland m. Abt 1830s to Ellen MURRAY d. 17 Oct 1849 Boston, Massachusetts Great-Great-Great-Great grandfather Hugh MADDEN b. Abbt 1794 Cork, Ireland m. Unknown date, unknown wife d. Date and town unknown.
Any information you can help us with would be greatly appreciated. We only know abouat the direct descedents, but would love to find collateral relations!
Thank you so much/ Go raibh míle maith agat an méid sin

Susan:
I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie and did not find any baptismal records for Madden children where the father was a Patrick Madden and the mother had a surname of Murray.
I then focused on Co. Cork and found a January 25 1839 baptismal record for a Jermeiah Madden in the Kilbrittain RC parish. The father was Patrick Madden but the mother was Ellen Minehan. There was also another Jeremiah Maddin record in the Lislee/Abbeymahon/Donoughmore RC parish October 27 1836 with father Patrick Maddin and mother Ellen Nihane. They lived in Kilsallagh.
So you have two possible leads. Are you aware of any siblings?

Please excuse my apology for taking so very long to respond to your efforts on my behalf. Shortly after I made the post, my husband became critically ill. Since COVID was still at large, I treated him from our home until my health suffered, and then transferred him to a safe hospital, then a hospice until he died. Two months have passed, and though I am still mourning him, I am back doing genealogy, and wanted to resume the various searches I am involved in.
I think the entry you found for the baptism in Cork is Dave Madden's GGgrandfather. Jeremiah Madden was supposedly born on 28 Jan 1838 -- your records showed 25 Jan 1839. His parents, according to what was passed down to David, were Patrick Madden (1811-1849) who died of TB in Boston at an early age, leaving behind his wife Ellen nee Murray (1819-?) in Boston. She had five known children that I know of: (1) Jeremiah; (2) Mary (1837-23 June 1863), who died in Providence, Rhode Island; (3) Ann (b. 1843-?); (4) John (b.1846-?); and (5) Ellen (circa 1853- 2 April 1896), who died in Boston City Hospital.
Could you perhaps find any additional records on Roots Ireland with the information I provided? Is the Baptismal Record available in the records of the Irish National Library? I'm going to try searching, so wish me luck. I wonder if gravestones may also be found in Kilbrittain? What other data might you be able to find -- if it is the right family? Do city records exist in a format that can be searched? Irish records are a bit difficult, compared to American ones, though I suppose that is to be expected given the length of time they cover!
Thanks again. Go raibh maith agat arís! You may email me directly at drsuewelsh@yahoo.com. I try to check the site daily. (Cé go n-admhaím go n-imíonn mé thar na bearta ó am go chéile...)
P.S. My former email @suewelsh@earthlink.net has been having problems, so I registered another of my addresses.
Thanks again. Go raibh maith agat arís!
