I have a suspect relative in Antrim.  According to the 1901 Census of Ireland he is living at House 20, Winetavern St, St Annes' Antrim.  There are about 30  other person boarding her all Roman Catholice of different ages and sexes living here as well.   I have assumed this to be a boarding house.

Most of the people living here their occupation is listed as  'DEALER'.

Does anyone know what is meant by DEALER.  I have not come across this term before as occupation in its own right

thank you

  • House 20 in Winetavern St, Belfast looks to have been a lodging house. Belfast had many of them to cope with the huge influx of people working in the city.

A dealer was someone who bought and sold things either door to door or possibly using a stall in the street or local market. Typically clothes or other dry products.

  • Darlene,

If the boarding house is near the port or the cattle mart the 'dealer' could be cattle dealer. I know my mother's house in Dublin was on the route between the cattle mart and the port and it was used as a boarding house for cattle dealers. They would leave the cattle at the mart overnight and stay in the boarding house. May be a similar situation in Belfast?
    Best wishes, Kieran
