Hello All, In an attempt to further my tree I have resorted to message boards in hopes that it will help me further along. At this point so feel as though I have exhausted all my research opition. I have a full membership on Ancestry and Roots. I hope someone may be able to help. My 3x grandmother was Mary Lyons1833-1912 from Greenwood/Turlough . She is documented on both townlands. According to her baptismal certificate her parents were Austin Lyons and Brig Finn. That's the only information I have. I would like to know if the parents are indeed correct and who her siblings were. I yield no Lyons matches on my Ancestery but believe that is due to a low threshold of CM. I know there are books like the Waldron journals... but is there anything on the Lyons families?
I really would like to confirm her parents ans any siblings.

Any help or ideas would be much appreciated.

    Hello again!

I checked Roots Ireland and the only baptismal record for children of Austin Lyons and Bridget Finn was January 14 1833. Roots transcribed the name as Margaret but I checked the parish register and the name was Mary. No marriage record but the Bekan records start May 1832 so likely Austin and Bridget were married before May 1832.

There are also Mary Lyons baptismal records in Bekan in 1834 1835 and 1836.

    Hello Roger!

Yes on Roots ,Mary Lyons baptism states her name as Margaret but she went by Mary. Do you have any recommendations for people who are researching and have exhausted all options? I can go back 15 generations on my English side but literally can't get past my 3rd Irish. It's so incredibly frustrating.

I feel your pain and have the same brick walls on all eight of my Irish lines. I get to my great-great grandparents and then stop.

I did look at the Tithe listings for Bekan civil parish and noticed a James Lyons in Greenwood. He was leasing around 42 acres. Not sure how he is connected to Austin.

  • Hi Roger and others

My DNA results revealed Irish ancestry in the form of John (1806-1893)  and Bridget (nee Morris, 1822-1890) Lyons, both from Bekan, who emigrated to Birmingham England at the time of the potato famine. My great great grandparents - and like other on this site I am too frustrated at not being able to get back any further!! Their first child, Austin (Augustine) Lyons was born about 1240 in Bekan, followed by Owen Lyons (also b 1840), then John, Ellen, Thomas, Marie, Maurice, Margaret and James T (as from Marie all born in Birmingham, Warwickshire). By profession John was a tailor and Bridget a tailoress. Of their Birmingham-born children some were baptisef in St Chad's church (Roman Catholic cathedral in Birmingham).

I cannot find any record of John and Bridget's parents or their marriage. I would love to be able to go back further with my Irish roots. I have a direct DNA link back through James T Lyons (he married Frances Wheatley (1862-1895). Their daughter Frances Lyons (1883-1963) was my grandmother. Their other children were James, John and Charlotte.

Let's hope ine of us manages a breakthrough!!

Best regards to all the Lyons famiy

  • Hi there !

I have some Lyons from Greenwood / Knocknafola on my tree. Who did your Mary Lyons marry ? I can see the death of a Mary Lyons Greenwood transcribed as 1912 but the actual record says 29/12/1911 . She was a widow though so unless she married another Lyons she wouldn't be your Mary Lyons ? Her nephew Austin Lyons was there at her death. I'm just trying to see how I can tie mine to yours ?

    My particular Greenwood Lyons are

Austin Lyons 1912 - 1997 he married Mary Feerick in Manhatten New york 29/08/1937

His dad -      Anthony Lyons b 1878 married to Ellen Fitzmaurice

His dad -      Austin A  Lyons b 1841 married to Bridget Kerrane

His dad -      Anthony Lyons 1810 married to ?         Patrick Lyons cousin present at his death

Haven't fully looked at this for a while or bottomed it out and its an interesting one for me. Unbeknown to us when i researched my Grandad who was a Lyons from Meeltran, Ballyhanis was that his English wife of Irish descent who he met in England, thier ancestors probably knew one another ! The Lyons above are connected to her dads side of the family and when i looked at my Grandads Lyons there are court records showing them in Greenwood with some of the above ! I don't think my grandparents were ever aware of this and i wish i could tell them now .....

Anyhow I'll see if I can add to this as i get chance to see if we all cross over and if so where ?
