 Hello everyone

This is a real long shot but my fingers are crossed. I need guidance please.

My G granddad was Patrick Kelly married In Burt  Co Donegal in Sept 1882, the marriage certificate states  he is aged 29 (born C1853?)   his father is  John Kelly deceased  and his fathers occupation was  RIC.

Patrick  died aged 53 (born C1854?) in Scotland in 1907 and his death certificate states his deceased  father John Kelly was a Sergeant in the RIC, also that Patricks mother maiden name was Sarah  Quigley and she is  deceased.

Having spoke with  family members no one could tell me where John Kelly came from other than Ireland!!

I wrote to the RIC some years ago but because I had so little information at that time they were unable to help. and there were to many John Kelly's to narrow it down.

Searching around Griffith and the Tithe Appointment book I could not link anything.

Last night I found  certificate for Sarah Kelly in Tooban died  aged 78  in 1891 (born C1813) and this Sarah was a widow of a policeman. Sarah's niece Mary Anne Quigley also from Tooban was present at the death.

Is this my eureeka moment!

Can I make the dates add up, or am I clutching at straws? Where do I go from here?

Was there a police station. in Tooban / Tievebane?

More searching and in the 1901 Census I found a John Quigley at 27 Tievebane Fohan aged 75 and RC, was this Sarah's brother?

  • Hello Sarah,

There was a marriage in the Catholic parish of Terryglass, Tipperary, of John Kelly and Sarah Quigly on 7 Sept 1839. You can see details at RootsIreland. I do not know if this is your ancestor, but thought I would pass it along as the names are the same.

Also, there are RIC records at FindMyPast. There are a lot of John Kellys, so it might take some time to review them, but certainly they are worth looking at.

    Good luck.

  •  Patricia, thank you for replying and the information.

I have not subscribed to Rootsireland, I may take a short subcription.  I  looked at Find my past  some time back but with limited information and no place name it was the proverbially needle in a haystack.  I will try again now that I have a potencial place name (s), and that Sarah may have been able to claim a pension.

I am hoping that there may be some Quigley family that may pick up on this.

. I have prowled Ancestry but not come up with anything.

     Thank you again, stay safe

    Regards

    Sarah

  • Sarah,

Further to Post by Patricia, there are children baptised in Lorrha, North of Terryglass in 1840 - David, 1844 - Julia - 1847 - Margaret.

The surname "Quigley"  is recorded in Griffith's Valuations for Terryglass and the Tipperary North area.

He is unlikely to be your "John Kelly".

  • Sarah,

There is a record of the death of a "John Kelly" in 1870. Source: www.ancestry.co.uk. He is a native of Co. Kerry and 21 yearfs of age when he enlisted in 1848. Ancestry has a list of 120 RIC members named "John Kelly".

If you contact the National Archives in Dublin  www.nationalarchives.ie  - they should be able to find the record.

    Regards,
