I recently discovered that my ggg grandfather, Michael Gleason/Gleeson, was born in Tipperary, Ireland around 1814. He ended up on Wilson, New York. He may have also been listed as living in Newfane or Lockport. All are very near each other. He died in Owasso, Michigan in 1886. His first wife was Bridget Dorsey (1815-1869), whom he married in Ireland. His second wife was Mary Chamberlain, who was born in Ontario, Canada (1833) and died in Nebraska (1919).

I am trying to find out where Michael and Bridget were from originally. If anyone has any clues, I would  greatly appreciate knowing them.

Thank you,

Geri

  • I have been trying to locate my Gleeson relatives in and around Nenagh and came across your post.  I knew I had seen Gleesons and D'Arcys somewhere.

Patrick Gleeson son of Patrick Gleeson and Biddy Darcey.  Baptised 26 Feb 1842, Bushfield, Ballina, Tipperary.  One of the sponsors was a John Darcey.

I've also noted a Michael Gleeson and Kitty Darcey marriage too, which happens to be the record I was most interested in.  I hope this may help.

Hi Cailin,  thanks for looking into this . Is it possible that Kitty and Biddy could be the same person ? I am sure that Michael Gleeson/Gleason is my ancestor. Married to Bridget Darcy/Dorsey. They did end up moving to America.
These connections are really helpful .

    thank you ,Geri

  • There seems to be some slight differences in the names.  Either they are interchangably using middle names or they are related (I have found this quite a few times).

There is a baptism for a Biddy Gleeson, 29 Jun 1844 Bushfield, ballina.  The parents are listed as Patrick Gleeson and Mary Darcey?? Record Transcription: Ireland Roman Catholic Parish Baptisms | findmypast.ie

I have found a Michael Gleeson and Mary Darcey marriage in Nenagh18 Feb 1822, witness Martin Darcey Record Transcription: Ireland Roman Catholic Parish Marriages | findmypast.ie too.

There is a marriage record for a Patrick Gleeson and a Catherine Darcy, in Youghalarra, Tipperary 1826 (near to both Nenagh and Ballina).  Patrick is listed as living in Boher and Catherine in Barbaha Parish of Youghal.

I would say the marriage alreay suggested in Cloughjordan is the best contender though.

    Regards,

  • Hi Cailin,

I appreciate this info. So many connections. I do agree that the marriage in Cloughjordan is the best contender , at this point. They did have a son , Hugh , who was born in Ireland . The rest of the children were born in Wilson, New York. I have found a few Hugh Gleesons in Tipperary, but no actual birth documentation. Still looking.
    Thank you for your help.
