Information on Michael Magnier of Ballyvisteen Kildorerry d 1877

Hello Margaret,

A search of the civil registration death records at the free irishgenealogy.ie website does not show the death of a Michael Magnier/Magner of Ballyvisteen for the year 1877.

If he died in Ballyvisteen, Civil Parish of Kildorrery, his death would have been recorded in the Mitchelstown Registration District.

According to the IreAtlas Townland Data Base, Ballyvisteen was in the Civil Parish of Kildorrey and the PLU (Poor Law Union) of Mitchelstown, based on those towns that were recorded in the 1851 Ireland census. See the IreAtlas entry at: https://is.gd/Iomp7G

I expanded the search at irishgenealogy.ie for Michael’s death under the name Magnier and Magner and found one death record for a Michael “Magner,” who died in Ballyvisteen on March 6, 1883 at the age of 55. At the time of death he was a bachelor. His occupation had been farmer. The cause of death was, “Unknown. No Med. attend,” that is, “No Medical attendant.”

The person who reported Michael’s death to the registrar was his brother James, whose residence is Ballyvisteen. The registrar, C. Buckley, recorded the death in the Mitchelstown Registration District on March 13, 1883. Michael’s death is the last entry in the death register, Number 275. Indications are, the 1877 death of Michael Magnier was not reported to the registrar.

Thanks for responding so quickly. I did wonder if perhaps Michael had died overseas and was being commemorated on the gravestone explaining why I couldn't find a record.

That may be the case Margaret. Do you know where he may have gone overseas? We can then look for a death record online to see if his death was recorded in that place.

Hi Dave,

Unfortunately I have no information to suggest that Michael left Ireland. My original interest came about because Kate Magnier (b 1839 and died in 1897) is my great great grandmother and in buidling the family tree I discovered the following.

Her sister Mary Anne (1845-1923) married William Fouhy (who disappeared in 1879 proir to the birth of his son William)

William emigrated to the USA and married Nora Magnier in 1905 in Massachusetts. James Magnier and Mary Ahern are listed as Nora's parents. I found their marriage record on Roots for 1859 listing Ballyvisteen, Kildorerry as the parish where the marriage took place. James died in 1892 (Record found) and at the age of 73 meaning that he was born about 1818

I found Mary Magnier lving in Ballyvisteen in the 1901 census with her daighters Mary A Condon (visiting from the USA where she married John W Condon in the 1890's), but no record of Mary in the 1911 Census nor a record of her death either. Mary's daughter Katherine emigrated to Massachusetts sometime between 1901 and 1909 where she is iincluded along with her sisters, Nora, Katherine and Johanna on the 1910 US Fedaral Census. Mary lived next door with her husband John until his death in 1918 and then lived with William, Nora and her sisters.

I was trying to find a link between James Magnier (also Magner) and Kate's parents Michael Magnier and Mary Thornhill, unfortunately the gravestone.for the Magniers in Kildorrery graveyard does not show the relationships betweeen the Magniers listed on it. Michael remarried after Mary's death to Eliza Carroll. If a death record showing Eliza's death as occurring  in 1886 with her stepson Thomas as being present  is the same Eliza Carroll, then Michael died prior to 1886 as she is listed as being a widow,
