Hi,

I hope you can assist me to locate records of parents of my great-grandmother Margaret Josephine NOONAN.  Margaret was baptised 11 Oct 1842 in Tipperary parish, Co.Tipperary, parents recorded as John Noonan and Margret Butler in the attached baptism register page (source National Library of Ireland; Dublin, Ireland; Microfilm Number: Microfilm 02495 / 07, and Ancestry.com).

Margaret Josephine Noonan migrated to New Zealand, married John Edward Harmston on 30 March 1880, and died on 4 June 1941 in Napier, New Zealand.

I also located the attached baptism record seeming;ly of a brother Edmund Noonan, baptised 9 July 1832 in same location and with same parents named as Margaret Josephine Noonan (source National Library of Ireland; Dublin, Ireland; Microfilm Number: Microfilm 02495 / 06, and Ancestry.com).

I have searched for the parents without success in NLI, IrishGenealogy, Ancestry.com. and Family Search, and fear that name variants are confusing me.

Your assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards

I searched on the subscription site FindMyPast.ie . We don't know if Edmund was the oldest child but assuming he was, the parents were likely married in 1831 or earlier and they would have been born 1811 or earlier. There are a handful of John Noonan/Nunan baptismal records 1812 or earlier.  I had the same experience with Margaret Butler with about five baptismal records in the area around 1810. There is no way to confirm any of these records at this point. John and Margaret could also have been baptized in a parish that no longer has records back to the early 1800s. For example, the baptismal records for Tipperary town start in January 1810  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0281

    Have you considered DNA testing?

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Hello Roger,

Many thanks for searching FindMyPast. Those Noonan/Nunan/Butler names are prolific in Co.Tipperary and like looking for a needle in a haystack. I will continue searching in neighbouring parishes also.

I have considered DNA and felt it added to a deluge of other data sources I am wrestling with.  Perhaps I ought to reconsider as an option to breakthrough some of the brick walls I face!

KInd regards, I wanted to say how helpful it is to have you and other volunteers assisting locally so far away from here.

    Go raibh maith agat
