My great great grandfather has been traced back to John Paddy Cummins or Commans.  He was born in Tipperary Ireland

in 1810 and died in Missouri in 1890.  I have found his headstone on line  He, his wife and daughter all died in 1890 - typhoid is  suspected.  He was father to my great grandfather William Monroe Commans who was born in Missouri in 1855 and died in Kansas City in 1932.  He was at various times a Baptist preacher and I found his headstone in the cemetery In Tebo, Missouri.  I remember going to the old church in Tebo Missouri to see his grave along with my great grandmothers who was Flora Ellen Dillinger Commans.  They were parents to my grandfather - John Franklin Commans who was born in 1900 in Tebo, Mo. and died in Kansas City in approx. 1992.  My grandmother was Bennie Warder Commans - they had my aunt, Jeanne Commans Brewer, and my father Bryan Franklin Commans.

I am trying to find additional information about my great great grandfather John "Paddy" Cummins or Commans.  In one census I found it said he was a farmer in Tipperary.  I am trying to find additional information about his family - his parents and where he lived in Tipperary.  He married Mary Pollie Harryman when he came to Missouri.  I would also like to know when he came to Missouri.

I would love to have additional information on my family.  Thank you!

  • Hi!  John "Paddy" Cummins  my 3rd great grandfather.  He and his family also lived in Clark, Missouri. He died in Scotland County Missouri in 1890, and I know that this is correct. My grandma's family lived in this area for many years.... Supposedly he and Mary Polly Harriman were married in 1844 is Washington, Tazewell Country Illinois January 14, 1844 BUT I cannot seem to find the marriage record.   (Not so far on any free sites, at any rate, lol.) The date for the marriage is repeated in a lot of family trees, but I have not found the record.       According to our family lore, he was said to be from Tipperary.  He was very deaf, supposedly had "crossed" the "big pond" numerous times---i.e. we thought that perhaps he had been a sailor at some point in his life, but I haven't found anything so far.

He is on an 1850 Census District 9 Clark Missouri, listed with his wife Mary, and his daughters Mary Jane (my great-great grandmother) and Isabel.  Your ancestor William Monroe was their brother, he was one of the youngest children.  Mary Jane, Isabel, John and William Monroe are the only children that I know about so far.

I have found some possibilities on immigration for him, and some POSSIBLE parents.  If you want to work together, please let me know.  Good luck with your search!! Erika G.

  • HI Erika!  I loved getting your message.  I have found very little about John Cummins - I havent found his birth certificate.  My father traced the family tree years ago but I was too young to pay much attention and my dad has been dead for 25 years and now i have no idea where those records are.  According to his reserach he found that John Paddy Cummins was the manager of the Long Orchard Estate in Templetuohy Ireland.  He worked for the Lalor Family.  I have a picture of the estate house and I will email it to you.  My full name is Rebecca Commans Cunningham - my email is bcunningham@everestkc.net.  Please feel free to email me or facebook friend me if you are interested.  I haven't been able independently verify what my dad found.  My dad was Bryan Franklin Commans, the son of John Commans who was the son of William Monroe  Commans.  I also found that John Paddy Cummins was married to Mary Pollie - I didn't have the marriage date so thanks for that.  And I have the children as John H Cummins ( I think he may have died young) William Monroe, Isabel  Haugeluken and your relative Mary Jane Stith.  I found indications that Mary pollie Harrymans relatives were Thomas C. and Jane B. Harryman.  I got that off the My Heritage website - I only paid the cheapest $90 a year rate and they added them to the tree.

I haven't gotten anywhere with trying to find records in Tipperary - they seem to be fragmented.  The gravestone of of John Paddy Cummins says his dates of life were 1815-1890 and Mary Pollie Harryman Commans were 1823-1900.  Marriage in 1844 lines up with those dates.

Thats an interesting family story that he was deaf!  I haven't heard that one.  I will check through my records that I have at home tonight and will see if I can find other info for you.  I'm just getting started on all of this.  I also gathered that John Cummins was wealthy or influential - my great grandfather, William Monroe Commans, worked at various times as a Baptist minister and salesman.  He is buried in the Tebo cemetery in Tebo, Mo.  I always suspected my dad sort of inflated John Paddy Cummins  position as manager at the Long Orchard House - I suspect he was just a farmer on the estate.

I will send you more if I find anything but please contact me if you would like to but I am perfectly fine communicating like this.

  • Erika - you can find a picture of the headstone for John Paddy Cummings Commans on the website for Indian Creek Cemetery in Sandhill Township Scotland County Mo.

You find also the gravestone for your relative Mary Jane Stith in that same cemetery. I think you can also find them on " Find a Grave"  There is a note that John Paddy and his daughter, Mary Jane, died 6 days apart of suspected typhoid

  • Hi Rebecca! I missed your reply somehow! I would love to compare notes! Sorry this answer is coming so late. Are you on ancestry? I am going to look for you on fb too. I would love to find out more about Paddy Cummins, he is a major brickwall ancestor for my sister and I. He's been really hard to find. My email is 74ann47@gmail.com. Erika

  • Hi Rebecca, p.s. It was interesting to hear about your ancestor William Monroe being a minister. His sister Mary Jane was married to Jeffrey Taylor Stith, but they became very involved (I am not sure at what point) in the adventist church. Their daughter, Nanny Mabel would raise a family of 12 (3 sets of twins!) most of whom would later be very involved in the SDA church as well. It seems that some of our ancestors were pretty religious! I was wondering, was anything said of Paddy being Catholic? Also, in our family much was said of him being from Tipperary, this was repeated again and again. Do you have any other snippets of info about his immigration to the US---I found several possibilities but wasn't sure which fit the situation better. ---Erika

  • Hi Erika! I loved getting your reply. I too am having a lot of trouble finding anything definitive in the way of info about John Paddy Commons. The name is so common plus it’s hard to know what his actual last name was - Commins, Cummins, Commons? I always heard Tipperary too and no - I never heard anything about him being Catholic. I focused on trying to find the ship he arrived in the United States on - but there are a few possibilities! I am going to send you the dates and names of the ships I found. They are in my office and I will send later today! Maybe together we will find something!! Rebecca

  • Erika- this is possible info about John Paddy Cummins. I found someone by that name with various birth years - 1810,1812 and 1813 in County Tipperary. Then I found a John Cummins that came to the USA on the Algonquin in 1839 that landed in Philadelphia then I found his marriage on 1-14-1844 to Mary Pollie Harryman By 1850 they are in the census in San Hill Mo. he is listed as a farmer and she is a housewife! But I have no idea if that’s our ancestor. The dates and his age seem logical and match up generally. But I have totally hit a wall on trying to find his parents. Apparently records in Ireland in the 1700s are really hard to locate His father and mother were prob born around 1780 or so. There are no census records that I can find on the free sites! Let me know if you have any luck!
