Hello All,
I am looking for the parents and siblings of my 3xgreat grandfather John McLean. All I know is that he was born c 1779. I am not sure if he was born in Ireland or Scotland. He married Isabelle Tweedy and she was alive in 1820.In Ireland they lived in the Carrick-on-Shannon area. John was living in 1851. In May 1823 he was in New Brunswick, Canada from Ireland. Her petitioned for land at Williamstown, New Brunswick, Canada in 1824. He was granted a 220 acre lot in 1832 and settled there with his family, all members of which had been born in Ireland.
In his History of the Methodist Church, T.W. Smith wrote as follows about John and his wife Isabelle Tweedy.
Isabelle McLean , a sister of Robert Tweedy, was the "litttle wife" to whom reference is made in an incident which the late John Brewster was wont to use with the thrilling effect on colonial and British missionary platforms. "And have you ever seen the Shannon?" said the old man to that minister, "And do you know the river?" "No" was the reply, "I I don't know it". The old man then told the story, how he had left the banks of the Shannon, and how, all were sad and sighing as they parted from friends, his "little wife" sang. Away with our sorrow and fear, We soon shall recover our home. She sang it again as they embarked for Canada, during the crossing when a storm hit, and when they landed in the wilderness
The following were the children of John and Isabelle Tweedy McLean
Joseph McLean b c 1801, living in 186 m. Ann Nutley

Michael b c 1816, living in 1891 m. Nancy Sherrard - They were my 2x great grandparents

According to a document in the Qualye Family Papers indicates that John may not have been a son, or he may have departed a number of years before the list was complied. All that is know is that he and his wife were living at Williamstown in 1830, when they had a son John b. 28 Feb 1830, and baptized in the Methodist Church.
The above information was taken from the book OLD NORTH ESK ON THE MIRAMICHI by W.D. Hamilton. This book has a wealth of information for anyone serching in the North Esk of New Brunswick, Canada.
Thank you for your interest,
