I am interested in making contact with descendants of Charles McKinley (c1828-1914) & Anne Reid (c1839-1905) married 20 April 1858 in Ballymore Church, Dunfanaghy. They then moved to Falcarragh where Charles worked as a groom on Olphert's Ballyconnell estate. In their later years they lived with their youngest daughter Mary Jane McClintock at Carrowcannon.

Children: Charles (1862-1929) married Elizabeth Stewart, lived in Scotland;  Alexander (1864-?) married Catherine Reid, lived Philadelphia USA; Ann (1866-1929) married Irwin Noll, lived USA; Harriet Martha McKinley (1867-1917) my great grandmother married William Williams, lived New Zealand; Catherine (1871-?) married Robert Johnson; & Mary Jane (1876-1952) married Thomas Henry Irvine McClintock, lived Carrowcannon, Raymunterdoney

The 1901 and 1911 censuses has the wife of Thomas Irvine McClintock as Eliza and she was shown as born in London. Below are the two census records and note that Charles McCinley was shown as a boarder not a father in law. Unusual!

I will get back to you with more info.

Here is the 1901 census for Charles McKinlay and family in Ballyconnell. Note Mary Jane was 24 and unmarried. Married daughter Catherine was also in the household.

Marriage of Thomas McClintock and Mary Jane McKinley in 1906. I think the 1911 census I found in Ballyconnell was for the father of Thomas McClintock who married  Mary Jane McKinley. That would explain the "boarder" annotation and the wife named Eliza born in London. I also see the son and Mary Jane in the household.

The older Thomas McClintock died in 1934 and his son was the informant. See fourth record

Mary Jane died in 1952 and she was shown as married. Her son in law Francis Alcorn was the informant.

Did not find a death record for the younger Thomas McClintock.

There is a Facebook group called Falcarragh, Crossroads, Gortahork in County Donegal  https://www.facebook.com/groups/176041022429045

You may want to join the group. Also, have you tested your DNA. Likely you will get matches descendants of the McKinley families you mention in your other message.

As an aside, one set of my great-great grandparents Daniel McFadden and Ann Cavanagh came from Derryreel in Raymunterdoney parish. They lived about 3.5 miles from Carrowcanon to the east.

  • Hi Roger

Many thanks for your help. Yes, that is the family. It makes for challenging research when the same first names of Thomas Irvine keep getting repeated through the generations.

Many thanks for the tip about the Falcarragh facebook page. I will definitely be joining that. I have had a DNA test done through Ancestry and a couple of the descendants of Mary Jane & Thomas McClintock show up as matches, along with descendants of some of Mary Jane's other siblings who emigrated to the USA. I'm particulaly interested in finding other relaitons who may still live in Ireland

In case others come across this post, the children of Mary Jane McKinley and Thomas McClintock are::

Thomas Irvine McClintock (1907-1945) married Edith Evelyn Glew. Died in New York

John Charles McClintock (1909-?). He also seems to have emigrated to the USA

George Francis Alexander McClintock (1911-?) married Catheriine Spratt. At least 5 children all born in Donegal - including yet another Thomas Irvine McClintock!

Mary Violet McClintock (1914-1981) married Francis Alcorn in 1938. They had at least 5 children all born in Donegal

Harry Reid McClintock (1919-2001) died in Canada

I had previously checked the online Irish phonebook which is limited since it has only land line phones. There were a number of Alcorns in the Dunfanaghy area but no one in Ballyconnell.
