18 months of searching. Owen Coyle married Anne Kelly 19 Feb 1833 witnessed by Owen Coyle and Mary Kelly.  On November 13, 1835, they baptised a son Richard Coyle.  On 30 Nov, 1865 Richard Coyle married Mary Smyth. Both of their residences were Gortloney Townland in Meath. Parents listed as Michael Smyth and Owen Coyle.  I traced all of the Richard and Mary's 13 kids to include the 5 that immigrated to the US to include my Great Grandmother.  Anne Kelly died in the Oldcastle Workhouse on 31 Dec 1871 at the age of 60 and Widowed.  That means Owen Coyle died prior to that.

Question- Does the Workhouse have burial records so I can figure out if she may have been buried with her husband Owen and more importantly where?

Question- When Richard Coyle and Mary Smyth were married in 1865 and they were both from Gortloney, should I assume that the farm came from Richard's father, Owen and that he most likely passed circa 1865?

You all are wonderful for what you do!!

  • I don't see the Anne Kelly Coyle death record in 1871 on the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie  I do see an Anne Kelly death record in December 1871 in the workhouse but wouldn't your ancestor be registered as Anne Coyle.

Based on a Facebook page for the Moylagh Historical Society, I don't believe workhouse records are available for 1871.

I don't see a death record for your Owen Coyle in the Oldcastle registration district but maybe the death was not registered. Also, he may have died pre-1864 when records were kept but I note the Richard Coyle marriage record did not list Owen Coyle as deceased which was the usual practice if the father was dead.

The 1854 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Moylagh civil parish does not list an Owen Coyle in Gortloney. There was an Owen Coyle in Milltown. Can't tell if this is a different Owen. Richard Coyle could have been farming with his father or possibly his father was dead and Richard had the lease. You would want to see the Revision Books for the properties shown in the Griffiths for Gortloney. Those records are currently only available at the Valuation Office in Dublin but by 2023, the records should be online.

  • You are wonderful.  The 18 months and 4 binders of documents I have collected shows the work that I put into these wonderful relatives that are responsible for producing Richard Coyle who produced Rose Coyle who produced my Grandmother and here I am today.  I cannot wait till I'm able to put my feet back on Irish soil to walk those grounds they walked. Also a trip to the Valuation Office in Dublin for the Revision Books.

Background Info-  Anne Kelly's Death was registered on 7 Feb 1872 in Oldcastle though she passed on 31 December 1871 according to IrishGenealogyIE website. Search Anne Kelly Death 1872 and her record appears age 60.  Your point on why she wouldn't be listed as Anne Coyle through me for a wrench in my research.  So I confirmed through IrishGenealogyIE website for the birth of Richard Coyle and Mary Smyth first child Anne, born 1866 that Anne Kelly was present. Then their second child Owen born 1868 said Anne Kelly Grandmother Present at Birth (What a Genealogy Homerun), then Thomas Coyl (Left the E Off) their third child in 1869 had Anne Kelly present at birth.  Their 4th Child Mary was born 11 Feb 1871 and Richard Coyle was Present which told me what happened to Anne Kelly and then I find that a Anne Kelly passed on 31 December 1871 at the Workhouse in Oldcastle.

More Background Info-  I have disected Griffith up and down since there is only one Owen Coyle record in Meath County in Milltown and there are 4 other Coyle's of the 36 registered in Milltown.  I believe that Anne Kelly's parish was Oldcastle so they got married there.  I believe Owen Coyle is from Dernakesh or Blackhills since there was 8 Owen Coyle's listed in the Cavan County Griffith and it's proximity to Meath County.  Why do I believe this?  Anne Kelly and Owen Coyle had 8 Children that I found with 2 children named John.  4 Children were baptised in Oldcastle and 4 baptised in Drumgoon with 2 of the children in Drumgoon given additional info with an address of Dernakesh (Bingo).  Why back and forth between Oldcastle and Dernakesh and another volunteer genealogist said that maybe the farm dried up and they had family and moved. (Makes Sense).  Oldcastle Baptisms 1833, 1835, 1837 and 1840 and the Drumgoon Baptisms 1835, 1836, 1839, 1846 with 1835 and 1839 saying Dernakesh.

Even More Background Info-  First son born 9 months after marriage was named Bernard so I searched for a Bernard Coyle since I have seen a consistent following of the Irish Catholic Naming convention of naming their first son after the father of the father. Bernard Coyle on 1833 Tithe is Drumsill (Drumsillagh) which is 10KM from Dernakesh.  A Bryan Coyle in Muff Townland in 1833 Tithe next to Dernakesh townland (Bryan and Bernard interchangeable) and Bryan Coyle in Townland Drumcar near Dernakesh and a Bryan Coyle in townland Blackhills in 1834 which later on in the 1857 Griffith, there were a few Owen Coyle's and Bryan Coyle.

Closing- ThankYou. I wanted to show you that I have done due diligence in my research but I can't process the 1865 marriage of Richard Coyle and Mary Smyth both from Gortloney. Part of me says that maybe it was the Smyth family giving the farm to Richard Coyle since there is a Michael Smith (not Smyth) in the 1857 Griffith for Gortloney and a Michael Smyth (Spelled correctly) in Garrynabolie in the 1857 Griffith but no Coyle's. No Coyle's in those 2 townlands.  Milltown is only 4-5 Kilometers from Gortloney so maybe that is my answer but Dernakesh and Drumgoon for baptisms has made this a tough search.  Richard Coyle and his family was Easy Easy since he lived in Gortloney until his passing in 1922.

    Thanks in Advance!
