Hello, I am working on my family history.  Any information regarding Edmond Fitzgerald who married Maraget Leary.

Census places them at house 3 Garanes

I am trying to connect with someone local or someone who might have knowledge of the family.  This would be house/family my Great Grandmother was born at.

I live in the States so I'm not local. I can provide some information on your family. The house number shown on the 1901 and 1911 census records was not an address. The RIC constables were responsible for picking up and certifying the census returns. When they came into a townland like Garranes, the first house they visited was House 1, second house was House 2 etc. You will note that the Fitzgerald family was listed in House 7 in the 1911 census.

Here is the 1878 civil marriage record for Edmond and Margaret. Note names of fathers shown on record

Civil registration of births started in 1864 and prior to 1864, we only have available church records. I searched the subscription site Root Ireland and did not find a baptismal record for an Edmond Fitzgerald with father Edmond in the Lisgoold RC records (the church where Edmond and Margaret were married).  I suspect that Edmond was born around 1855. I located a January 21 1855 baptismal record for an Edmond Fitzgerald with father Edmond in the Aghada church records. (Aghada parish is south of Lisgoold). The mother was Mary Haly. I note on the 1878 civil marriage record that one of the witnesses was a John Haly.  Possibly this is the baptismal record for your Edmond.

I did not find a good lead for a baptismal record for Margaret Leary.

See sixth record for 1937 death record for Edmond Fitzgerald  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu…

See third record for 1914 death record for Margaret Fitzgerald. She died of Bright's disease which is a kidney related disease.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Wow..  Thank you for the quick and detailed response.  I learn more and more every time I start searching and appreciate your help.  The individual that suggested I posted on your forum introduced me to Griffith's Valuation.  That site identifies the household location in Garranes which is consistent.  I think I used #3 because that was the parcel number on the map.  Is there anything else you can suggest to get a local support?

  • Hi Dennis,

I would suggest getting in touch with the Carrigtohill Community webpage. They will be familiar with the area and may know someone locally with knowledge of your household location or names of interest. Their website is here --> http://carrigtwohillcommunity.ie/contact/

This lists contact details for the group. Good luck on your search!!

  • Hi - I have an Edmond Fitzgerald born in Inch, Aghada 1833, baptised 25/4/1833. He grew up around Gyleen, Inch, Finure area south of Aghada town, south west of Midleton.

Edmond's father was Garrett Fitzgerald, mother Margaret Wall.

I don't know what happened to Edmond at this time, his brothers emigrated to Australia and USA, he may have stayed in Ireland.

He could be the father of your Edmond, timeline fits.
