Looking for informaion about Michael McDermott' s family. He was born in Ireland circa 1820. His paents were Bernard McDermott and Rose Murtha. Michael married Rose Connelly circa 1861 in Ireland. She was born in 1831 in Ireland. They had a son Patrick born in February 1862 in Ireland. They moved to the U.S. in 1864 and lived in Salem, New York. Their other children born in Salem, NY were: Mary, Barnard, Micheal.
I had a record searach for the birth of Michael's son Patrick in Counties Cavan, Roscommon and Sligo and they did not find it.
Michael had a brother Patrick, born circa 1829 in Ireland. He also moved to Salem, NY and Jackson, NY. In 1865 his mother Rose, born 1793 in Ireland, lived with him in Salem. Rose died in 1878 in Jackson, NY.,

Roberta:
I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland for the marriage record and the only record I found was an 1858 marriage record for a Michael McDermott and a Margaret Connally in Glenamaddy Co. Galway. I also searched for the baptismal record for Patrick and did not find a good lead. Just to confirm Michael's mother and wife were both names Rose?

Rose was the name of Michael's mother and wife. MIchael's death certificate said he was born in Killcross, Ireland. A person at a LDS center did some research for me. He said that the townlands Killcorss beg and Kilcross duff were in Co Cavan and the Civil parish of Shercock, Clankee Barony, Bailieborough P.L.U. He said I should search the Catholic parish register of Killanne. Can I find this online?

Roberta:
The register for Killann is online but there is a gap in the records from 1850-1868 which explains why we can't find any records. Also, the records start in 1835 so baptismal records for Michael and Patrick would not be available See link to the register https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0817 Killann is also know as Bailieborough.
We have a volunteer in the area and I will confirm that there are no records for 1850-1868.

Hi Roberta,
It is difficult with gaps in the records. Have you looked for Rose's death certificate? (it may be more specific than Michael's) The reason I ask is that if she was from a townland/different parish, we may be lucky to find the marriage cert as a couple usually got married in the bride's parish. I looked at the 1901 census in the hope that some of their siblings survived to then and I found a Michael Murtha in Killcrossduff http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Cavan/Taghart/Kilcross…, I looked for his death on irishgenealogy.ie and he died their also
MICHAEL MURTAGH

I live not too far from this townland and there are no Murtagh's living there now, but I think I know someone who is related to a Murtagh and I will ask them do they know of a connection to this family, give me a week to do this.
Have you looked at all the census in America? As very often there may be a chain migration and they may have brought family over after they settled themselves. These people may take us closer within civil registration dates and help us locate their townland. There is also a townland of Kilnacross in Skeagh outside Bailieborough in the parish of Knockbride and in 1901 there is a Dermott family living there. Have you done a DNA test? I know sometimes they present more questions than answers, but it may help with the exact location of your family.
