Cloran

Hi Aussie,

Attached a record of the surname "Cloran" in County Galway 1826 - 1828. None is recorded as "Patrick", but often times, one person held the Lease on behalf of others, so it is possible that he may be a son of the holder. It is a rare surname. Appears in County Galway in the 17th century as "O'Cloran (Surnames of Ireland - Edward MacLysaght)

Michael is recorded in the 3rd paragraph in Kilthomas (IPeterswell) which is near to the town of Gort. Kilcolgan and Kilbeacanty are other parishes in the Gort area. Parishes do not have straight lines, so the often enter twine.

Further to previous Post, I attach a record of a Darby Cloran having been born on September 2nd 1847 and  baprised in the parish of Loughrea on September 29th 1847. Parents: Patrick Cloran and Mary Burke. Baptism Sponsor: Bridget Higgins. Address: Ardrahan. Darby is another form of Dermot. Do you have this record.

Two earlier posts about Clorans

Hi there - only joined to day so please excuse.  I have been trying to research the Cloran family for years.  I have a very tenuous link that they may be from this parish.  I am looking for Thomas Cloran who was born sometime between 1825 and 1832.  he moved to the UK prior to 1853 as he married Sabina Griffin in Warrington England in 1854.  Thomas Cloran's son moved to the USA to be near a relative called Timothy Cloran in Ohio USA.  Timothy Cloran was born in about 1824.  the teniuos link I have is that there is a Timothy Cloran listed in the Kilbeacanty Tithe Applotment Books​ in 1825 - maybe the father of the other Timothy??  This is as far as I can get and is all based on summising.  Any help would be very gratefully recieved.  I am coming over to Ireland (from England) in August and would love to get this a little more tied down by then.  Many many thanks.  Heather

• If you obtain a copy of the 1854 marriage certificate, it should give you Thomas’s father’s name and occupation. From that you may be able to judge whether he’s likely to be in the tithes or not. (The tithes really only list people with land, so farmers would be in but labourers normally would not).

  The marriage reference is Warrington Jul – Sept 1854 Volume 8c page 185.

  It is nice to hear from you.Clorans is definitely a Kilbeacanty name.The Timy Cloran you mentioned was from  lismoyle Ballycahalan.There are still Clorans in Ballycahalan .I have contacted another person who has done research into Clorans and have asked them if they have any information that maybe of help to you.I also have a facebook page for Kilbeacanty Reaching out I have put up photos of the Stone we erected to commemorate Liam Mellow who had a training camp for volunteers  in Cloran's field in the lead up to the Rising in 1916.https://www.facebook.com/Kilbeacanty-Reaching-out-169827993162067/
