Hi, looking for where the Shanleys are connected to the Lavins of Ardgallagher.
The surgeon John Shanley (1895-1996) was a "cousin" of my grandfather Charles John Lavin (1883-1947). I have a photo of a family group attending the ordination of my great uncle Fr Damian (Ciaran Lavin) in 1919. This photo includes my great grandmother Jane O'Hara Lavin, 5 of her 12 children, John Shanley, his sister May (Mary Elizabeth), & possibly John's mother.
The connection had to be close as my mother took me on several occasions as a child to see John when I needed a doctor.
John was born Dublin to Peter Wm Shanley and Mary Louisa Kelly, both originally from Roscommon. Peter's dad was Edward, Mary's Patrick, both farmers.
This is where I draw a blank. Jane O'Hara's husband was Patrick Lavin (1843-1911). His father Luke was married twice, and it's possible that there were more children between 1826 & 1845 than the 7 recorded. Did Patrick have a sister who married a Shanley. Can't find anything. Thank you anyone who can help.

    Church records in that east end of Roscommon (Roosky and Termonbarry parishes) do not start until 1865.

  • Hi Fionn. The 1882 marriage record Roger found is for my great grandmother's younger sister, Bridget Shanley, and John Lavin. Bridget is the daughter of Peter Shanley of Derrymoylan, Roosky, Strokestown Roscommon in the parish of Termonbarry. John Lavin was present when his father-in-law Peter Shanley died 27 January 1886 in Derrymoylan. Another online tree shows John and Bridget had sons John and James Lavin, but there were no source records and I have not yet researched that line.

    My great grandmother,, Mary Ann Shanley, born about 1848, married James Mitchell (b1844, Cloonfower) in 1874 and eventually settled in Philadelphia between 1878-1882. A brother, Michael Shanley (b1852) married Mary Dempsey in Durham England and also settled in Philadelphia in 1882. Both of their marriage records show father was Peter Shanley. I believe, but have not proven, that their mother was Catherine Dooner Shanley (1817-1867) and that Thomas Shanley (1853-1881 Philadelphia) and Ellen Shanley (1865-1867 Strokestown) may be siblings.

  • Hi Lori, while Roosky & Strokestown aren't too far from the Lavin home of Ardgallagher, this Lavin Shanley marriage isn't the correct one for me. I need a male Shanley marrying a female Lavin.
    So far I have Peter William Shanley and his wife Mary Louisa Kelly moving to Dublin (he became a successful draper). He died in Dublin with brother James Shanley present. James was also a draper and lived on the same street.
    On Peter's marriage, his father is listed as Edward Shanley, farmer. Same on James's marriage. I can't definitively find their births in Roscommon/Leitrim, nor anything on their father Edward, his children or his death.
    Which is why I'm stumped.
    Of course there may be a second link and I'll have a look at John Lavin's dad Hugh to see if I can find out anything, though Hugh is not a family name, but you never know. Best wishes.
    Maybe Roger has more ideas?
