Hi,
I'm trying to understand a baptism record from Kilbeggan, County Westmeath.
James Mooney was baptised on 9 December 1853, but his parents seem to be James Carey and Mary Bastick. I don't understand why he should have a different surname. Looking at other baptisms, this seems to be quite a common feature. Am I reading the records incorrectly? Can anybody explain where I'm going wrong? Thanks.

Duncan,
The parents were James Mooney and Eleanor Bastick.
The Baptismal Sponsors were James Carey and Mary Bastick. Baptismal sponsors are found mainly in the Roman Catholic Church.

Duncan,
I attach a copy of the baptism record. The entry is confusing. Did the priest make an error?
I have checked for siblings - Mooney and Carey with no result.
There is a record of a Thomas Bastick in Birr who joined the Military in 1816 and a James Mooney in Kilbeggan who joined the local Militia c1850. Possible connection?

McCoy,
Many thanks for looking at this and clarifying it for me. I don't really have any information about the Mooneys (or Basticks) in Ireland. The James Mooney who was born in 1853 had moved to Liverpool by 1882 (possibly he had only just moved by then, as he doesn't seem to be on the 1881 census there). He got married in Kirkdale in October 1882, and his father was also named as James Mooney, a "land steward" but that is all I know about his father.
It makes sense that James's mother was Eleanor - he named his first daughter Ellen and, following her death as a toddler, he named a subsequent daughter Eleanor.I know nothing at all about the Basticks, so this gives me something else to look into!
Thanks again,
Duncan
