Hi there,
First time posting here - I have hit a brick wall with my paternal line and am seeking some asistance please.
My 4th g g father Patrick DARBY (b. circa 1806) emigrated to Australia with his Wife Amelia/Emily/Emilia Lac(E)y in 1854 with their 3 adult children. Thomas & Patrick were aboard the Sultana with their parents from Liverpool to Portland, and Jane (who was with her husband and 2 small children were aboard the Almora). The children were all born in Blanchardstown, Dublin - as were the two granchildren, there is mention of Mulhuddart in one certificate and I have what I think is a firm record of residence in Coolmine, Dublin from the valuation records of a dwelling lease from a Thomas Lacy. Death records here in Australia suggest his wife was from Co Dublin so this could be a relative? As these areas are all within close proximity, this all seems to fit.
However...Patrick's death record says that he was born in Co.Wicklow and despite my best efforts, I cannot find hide nor hare of any record of him in WIcklow, nor anything further in Co Dublin, such as a marriage. Darby does not appear to be a common name in either county.
I have begun trawling through the images of the catholic parish registers as our surname has been spelled/transcribed many different ways over time and the online indexes have proved fruitless, but wondered if anyone had any advice on how to limit my searching to be more effective.
Many thanks,
Caz

The best way to more efficiently look for church records particularly RC records is to subscribe to a subscription site such as Roots Ireland, Ancestry.com or FindMyPast.ie
I searched on Roots Ireland in Co. Wicklow for a Patrick Darby baptismal record and located two records both in 1812. Not sure if 1812 is too late for your Patrick. If 1812 is too late perhaps your Patrick was baptized in a church which no longer has records back to 1806.
Patrick Darby baptized July 13 1812 Rathvilly RC church father Christopher Darby and mother Margaret (no last name shown) family lived in Rathdaniel
Patrick Darby baptized November 12 1812 Rathvilly RC church father John Darby mother Bridget (no last name shown)
Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Roger,
Thanks for your reply. I really appreciate your response.
I have a subscription to Ancestry and have noted those records, however I think both of them may be a little late. Patrick was listed as aged 48 on his emigration record (1854) and 54 on his death record (1860), hence how I have estimated his approximate year of birth. His wife was listed on shipping arrival as being 46, so it seems plausible that it's relatively close to the truth - I know ages were often out by a few years, even when given by firsthand account. His eldest daughter was baptised 1825, so an 1812 birth might be stretching it a bit :)
Something I omitted in my original post - his parents were noted as Thomas and Margaret on his death record.
I may have come to the end of the available information on this line, but thought it was definitely worth a shot here.
Regards,
Caz

If you have not done so already, DNA testing may give you some leads.
