Hello again,

I've spent some time over the last few putting my family tree together and I have hit a roadblock, I can't seem to find a birth or death date for Thomas Doyle or much information about the farm they lived on called Gormona. Any records, insight or information about him or his wife would be greatly appreciated. The information I do have is as per below:

Thomas Doyle was born in 1836 in Ireland, the son of Catherine and Patrick. He married Mary Rourke on February 24, 1879, in Laois, Ireland. They had eight children in 17 years. He died in 1902 in Carlow, Carlow, Ireland, at the age of 66.

    There are two Gormona townlands in Co. Carlow. One in Dunleckny civil parish and the other in Lorum civil parish. Both civil parishes have Bagenelstown as the RC parish. I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and the only Thomas Doyle baptismal record in Bagenelstown RC parish with parents Patrick and Catherine was a August 7 1821 baptismal record. Catherine was Catherine Hayes.

  • In Griffith's Valuation, taken in the mid-1800s, there were two heads of household in Gormona named Doyle:

    Just on the Doyle Gormona bit .

    The following baptisms are in Dunleckney/Bagenalstown Register  for Doyle address Gormona .

     

    28th February 1830 Mary to Thomas Doyle and Judith Farrell sponsors James Doyle and Margaret Dunne 

    5th August 1832 James to Thomas Doyle and Judy Farrell sponsors James Doyle and Anne Byrne 

    1st March 1835 Catherine to Thomas Doyle and Judy Farrell sponsors Patt Kelly and Mary Gahan

    26th November 1837 Margaret  to Thomas Doyle and Judith Farrell sponsors Edward Brennan and Catherine Doyle

  • On Griffiths valuation c.1850 Thomas Doyle is a tenant of Thomas Bunbury renting c.52 acres in Gormona whilst Patrick Doyle is renting c.58 acres from the same landlord in the same townland .

    Patrick Doyle looks to have the better land and the more valuable house going by the rateable valuation .

    Looking at Griffiths maps and superimposing modern satellite map it looks like Thomas Doyle house etc is totally gone as nothing there only field whilst dwellingplace of Patrick Doyle has a modern house almost exactly in the same place .

    Both Doyles were in Gormona civil parish of Dunleckney .The part of Gormona in Lorum civil parish had no Doyle occupiers .
