Hello

I am looking for information on Ancestors:

John AHERN/E or AHERN, born in Cork in 1798 died in Australia in 1878.  He married Margaret BRIEN/O'BRIEN who was born in 1806 in Aghada, Cork and died in Australia in 1891.

They arrived into Australia in 1838.

  • Sandra:

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and was not able to locate a John Ahearn marriage to a Margaret Brien in the North Cork parishes.

The only Margaret Brien baptismal record in the Aghada records was in 1804 (April 30th) parents John Brien and Catherine Barry. You mention 1806 for Margaret in Aghada, do you have a copy of the record?

The earliest baptismal record for a John Ahearn was a John Hearn who was baptized June 15 1808 in Aghada father Hugh Hearn mother Mary Murphy. I assume this record is not for your John. Likely your John was baptized in a parish that no longer has records back to 1798.

Let me know if you have questions.

  • Thank you for your response Roger.

Must admit I am at a loss as to obtain the Irish records.

    What I do have is:

Margaret Brien/O'Brien/O'Bryan - her death index states that father David.  Margaret and John AHERNE were married on 07 Jul 1826 in Aghada according to death certificate.  They immigrated to Australia on the "Dutchess of Northumberland on bounty, on 22 Apr 1838.

Margaret states she was a needlewoman and John a stonemason on shipping list.

I also have information that John lived in Charleyfield???

  • Sandra:

Roots Ireland has a May 30 1806 baptismal record in Youghal RC parish for a Margaret Brien father David Brien mother Catherine Lee. Youghal parish is a good deal to the northeast from Aghada. No records of siblings to this Margaret.

I did not find any baptismal records for children of John Ahearn and Margaret Brien.

There is a Charlesfield townland in Clonmeen civil parish which is a good distance away from Aghada.

  • My cousin visited yesterday.  She travelled to Ireland in 2013 and visited ancestral lands.  Apparently the Family lived in Charleville in Aghada/Rostellam?  Sandra

  • Hi Sandy,

I just came across you on the Message Board.

My great-great-grandmother was a Mary Brien/O'Brien from Ballymacuidick townland in the parish of Aghada. She married my great-great-grandfather, Thomas Devonshire and they had 7 children. Thomas was born in 1840, so Mary may have been a year or two younger. I don't have any information on the O'Brien family, but if I come across anything, I will send it to you.

    Kind regards,
