Jeremiah Clifford (abt. 1829), Tralee

I wrote a reply earlier today and it appears that there was a problem with posting my comments.

Shanaknock is in O'Brennan civil parish and the RC parish would be Ballymacelligot. Unfortunately, baptismal records for that parish start in 1868. The 1852 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for O'Brennan civil parish shows a Jeremiah Clifford in Shanaknock townland. https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/kerry/obrennan.php   

My belief is that this record was likely for the father rather than the 1829 Jeremiah which would indicate to me that the 1829 Jeremiah was not from Killeentierna parish but O'Brennan parish and the RC parish of Ballymacelligot.

Thanks Roger for confirming what I suspected...that Jeremiah could not be from Kileentierna. I appreciate the Griffith's link. I will check it out.

I already contacted the RootsIreland site, and they told me that they do not have a Kerry center....too bad!

Just curious why you say the Griffith's valuation if for the father, Jeremiah and not the son Jeremiah (abt. 1829)? Is it because he would be too young to rent land? I'm still learning 

about these things.

Interesting to note in that record, there is a Johanna Ready also as a tenant in Shanaknock, and Jeremiah, the son, married a Johanna Reidy (also seen in the records as O'Reidy).

The Irish sure threw around the O's...sometimes there, sometimes not in records and thru the generations....I see it all the time in my research. My maiden name is O'Connor, and

these days, no one would consider dropping the "O"! :)

Yes, the approximate age was my reasoning. The actual survey was likely completed a few years before 1852. Just to be clear, there is no impediment for a 21 year old to be leasing land but not very likely.

The Mc's and O"s were dropped a lot in the 19th century. O's more than Mc's. Many immigrants restored their family prefix when they came to their new country. The Irish who stayed restored the prefixes in the early 1900s for the most part.
