Hello there.

This is my first post on IrelandXO so let's see how it goes ..

My great grandfather William Costello and at least two of his siblings emigrated to New Zealand around 1860. His father was Michael Costello. I believe Michael farmed lots 5A and 5B in the Townland of Lawlesstown (Clonmel Rural). He shows up in the 1852 Griffiths Valuation. In the 1901 Census I believe his son James and family (wife, four sons and three daughters) occupied the farm (house number 3). In the 1911 census only James and his four sons are present at the farm (now house number 4).

In the 1950's one of my great aunts visited the farm and met with three of the brothers who still lived there. Subsequently other relatives of mine have visited the area.

I understand the Ard Gaoithe Business Park now occupies most of this farm. It certainly overlies plots 5A and 5B on mapviewers which show both modern imagery and historical maps.

A painting of the farm was commissioned by one of my relatives. I am lead to believe that the gate post alongside the lean-to outbuilding in the foreground of the attached image may have been kept when the business park was developed and incorporated into one of the buildings. This was pointed out to one of my NZ relatives who visited the area in c2006 and who was accompanied by one of the nephews of the abovementioned remaining three brothers.

My relatives and I would be most interested to know if the gate post still exists and to receive some images of it, if that is possible. If someone was able to check this out and confirm my understanding, perhaps take some photos and even enquire as to how/why the gate post was retained, we would be most appreciative.

Kind regards,

Paul

  • Here's contact info for a business in Ard Gaoithe. Perhaps they might be able to put you in touch with someone who would know the answer to your query. Good luck.

  • Hello Paul,

Is one of your relatives (a TC) in Ireland at the moment (July 2023) from New Zealand researching your Costello ancestors of the Mile Tree?

I think he was speaking to my Dad about the Costello farm today.

My Dad recognises the house in the painting that you uploaded in your post here and has a lot of information to potentially share with you.

If interested, you might contact me.

    Regards,

    J.J.

  • Hello J.J.,

indeed yes, TC is in your area as we speak. I had the names of some folk who had knowledge of the farm that were provided by the owner of a business that’s in the business park. TC was going to get in touch with them. Maybe your Dad is one of them?

Definitely interested in pursuing this further.

    Thanks for reaching out.

    Kind regards,

    Paul

  • Many online platforms charge fees or commissions for using their services, cutting into businesses' profit margins. It's essential for sellers to carefully evaluate the cost-benefit ratio and factor these expenses into their pricing strategies.

  • Building trust and maintaining a positive reputation are crucial in the online realm. Negative reviews or incidents of poor customer service can tarnish a business's image and impact its long-term success.
