James McFadden married Sarah Gallagher around 1820. They had sons Patrick Jeremiah McFadden b 1826 d 1899.
Charles Joseph McFadden b 1830 d 1915.
John McFadden b 1842 d 1925- all who immigrated to United States. They all settled in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

Other researchers say that the McFaddens are from Glenvar.

My ancestors Mary Gallagher b about 1840 and Catherine Gallagher are from Glenvar.  My hypothesis is that Sarah Gallagher mentioned above is their aunt.

In the 1901 and 1911 census have many McFaddens in Tirlaydan.

The griffiths valuation has 34 James McFaddens in Donegal. The closest to Glenvar is in Drumhallagh Upper - which the map shows as being about 9 km south of Tirlaydan.

Also Patrick McFadden immigrated to USA in about 1847/8 with a Michael McMonigle (McManigal in USA) They were both about 20 years old. They then went to Williamsport together for work and Patrick become a well renowned citizen of Williamsport.  They were both cattle drovers, butchers, and realtors.  My ancestor, Mary Gallagher married John McManigal (either a brother of the Micheal McManigal above or the obituary got the first name wrong). John McManigal and Patrick McFadden were life long friends and sponsors for childrens baptisms and Two of Johns boys were pallbearers at Patricks funeral.

Can any of you help me connect the dots as to how these McFadden’s may be related to those in Tirlaydan?  And what Gallagher family Sarah may have been connected with?

in the Griffiths valuation (1857) I see many McFaddens in Tirlaydan. A John Gallagher and a James Gallagher in Carrowreagh and a Peter Gallagher in Meentaghmore.   I'm wondering if Peter and John and James are all brothers?

I will alert the volunteer for Clondavaddog about your message. Since Christmas and the holiday season is close at hand, likely he will not be able to get back to you until after January 1.

  • Hello Dave,

James McFadden married Sarah Gallagher around 1820.

    Patrick Jeremiah McFadden b 1826, Charles Joseph McFadden b 1830, John McFadden b 1842,

My ancestors Mary Gallagher b about 1840 and Catherine Gallagher are from Glenvar.  My hypothesis is that Sarah Gallagher mentioned above is their aunt.

Also Patrick McFadden immigrated to USA in about 1847/8 with a Michael McMonigle (McManigal in USA) They were both about 20 years old.

It is unfortunate but all these names that you have provided birth years for are all born before 1847. The year of 1847 is the very first year that Church Registry started to be recorded by the Catholic Church in the Parish of Clondavaddog (Fanad & Glenvar) followed later by Civil Registration in 1864.

I see from previous queries this is something that has been pointed out before and you might have missed it, however it is important that you understand going forward that there regrettably is no way of connecting the dots, whether any of these names provided are siblings, cousins or even aunties.

The same is true for making connection between families in different townlands given in 1857 Griffith Valuation, it is just too far back as the houseowners recorded are most possibly born before the 1830s

Thank you Seamus. I appreciate your reply and explanation.  I realize we are, unfortunately, just a little too far back for the records. We had never made the McFadden connection before and I was hoping maybe someone knew something of the history of the McFaddens of Tirlaydan. I apologize; I should have been more clear in my post that I realized there are no baptism records going back that far. (I posted this info on friends of Glenvar as well and have made a contact that may be helpful). It seems that James McFadden and Sarah Gallagher had some children that remained in Ireland. Possibly some born after 1847.

thank you again for looking into it and for the links to the registers.  I've searched a couple sites with no luck but I'll see if perhaps another child shows in the register starting in 1847.

    Happy New Year Seamus,

  • Hello my Helen Gallagher's parents were from Glenvar, they were Denis Gallagher (1811-1844) and Agnes Boyle (1817-1871), they emigrated around 1840 is my best guess. Not sure if they are part of your family line, but if you've had dna done through ancestry or my heritage then I'm on there (Sarah Jones)
