Greetings!  I am trying to track down the parish and add more info to my tree on another branch of my Irish ancestors.  I have Thomas Delany, born 1833 in Ireland, Died in Denver Co 1891.  Married to Mary Carroll b. 1837 in Ireland.   Mary's Parents (from a death cert) listed as Margret Carroll and John Carroll.  I don't know if Thomas and Mary were married in Ireland, It does look like the immigrated to Detroit, MI by 1856.  Mary died in detroit in 1874 at only 32 years old.  Would love any info and direction on the irish side of this branch.

Thanks so much!

Jennifer Fontaine

  • Hello again Jen

Have you done your DNA and it might help narrow down the part of Ireland they came from.

Also Date of Birth for Mary - if she died in 1874 age 32 she would only have been born in 1842.  Or maybe she was born in 1837 and was actually older when she died.

If she was only 32 and born in 1842 she would only have been 14 yearl old when she went to USA, if so did she go on her own or with her parents

Carroll and Delaney are very common Irish names

I have searched Irishgenealogy.ie and did not find any records yet.

  • Jennifer/Geraldine:

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and the only Thomas Delany/Mary Carroll marriage was in 1830 in Co. Laois too early for your interests. They either married in the States or their church no longer has the record available. More likely the States.

Delany is primarily a Co. Laois/Kilkenny surname but was found in many other counties. Carroll was found in every county in Ireland and as Geraldine indicated DNA testing results would be very helpful. Also, names of siblings might be helpful.

  • Hello!  Thank you for the replies!  I have done my DNA, Ancestry.com puts me in North Munster.  But I do have other Irish ancestors that were definitely in Co. Limerick (Ballylanders/Cullane) until the late 1800s also- Ireland XO has already helped me discover details about them!  Different sources list different ages for Mary Carroll (which we see a lot of course- so nice to just adjust your age, right?)  It says 1837 on a census record, and I just found found a babtism record that says 1835- born to John Carroll and Margaret Brennan, Baptism date Feb 23 1835 in Diocese Kildare and Leighlin.  John and Margaret Carroll (born Margaret Brennen) are listed as her parents on the MIchigan Death cert, so I think this is my Mary Carroll.....

I did find a sibling, William Carroll born in 1845 to John and Margaret Carroll (b. Brennan), baptised June 1 1845 in Laois Ireland.  Birth place listed as Kilfeacle.  I don't see William in many other records or in Michican with Mary and trhese parents.... Maybe he died young...

Antoher sibling Patrick Carroll baptized March 25 1832 in Laois.

Another sibling John Carroll, birth listed anywere from 1832 to 1835 on US Census records.

It does appear that at least her mother Margaret (Brennan) came with her becasue I see her death date in Michigan.  Not sure about the father John Carroll.

I couldn't find any parents or siblings of Thomas Delany born 1833 (or thereabouts).  It is a bit confusing, there are a lot of Thomas Delanys in the records.

  • Hello Jen

If you have done your DNA you have probably uploaded it to Gedmatch.

There are lots of different County groups where you can run your kit number on to see what relations you come up with

    Have you tried this

Also on Facebook there are lots of DNA groups for different Counties, these might also be worth a try.

If you have your kit number and dont know how to run it on the Ancestory Projects I will help you

    Just let me know

  • Hello Geraldine!  Thanks so much for the reply.  Yes, I did uplaod to GedMatch years ago, but never did become too familair with it's features.  My kit # is A811720, any direction on the Ancestry projects would be much appreciated.  Would be great to make some connections.  I will look on facebook.  I know for certain I am connected to County Limerick through the other Irish branch.  Thank you again for your help and Happy New Year to you!
