Marg:
What was the religious denomination of Maryanne and who did she marry and what year? No records came up in early searches.

Thanks Roger for your response. Bit of controversy in the family as whether she was a catholic but some believe she was Jewish.
She married Samuel Lucas in 1844 at Westport County Mayo. Information from her death certificate although countless searches have not found a marriage certificate for that year.
I was given information the she was baptised in Cork and her surname was Lucus. Parents name the same as I have for Maryanne. The parish had two names. Not terribly helpful but she is a mystery.
Thanks Marg

Marg/Roger,
Subscription site www.rootsireland.ie has a record of the marriage of a Mary Anne Lucas in Westport on January 29th 1845.
Groom recorded as N.L. 69th Regt.. Witnesses: William N.L. and Mary Campbell.
Footnote: Grooms 1st name either Samuel or Daniel.
The N.L. suggest that the Groom and the 1st Witness did not want their surnames recorded?
The records are on www.nli.ie, but apparently not in order of date. No record found for the birth of Mary Anne.
It is possible that the bride and groom were closely related, hence the secrecy.
Regards.

69th Regt. should read 65th Regt. Both recorded as Roman Catholic.

Marg,
Attached a report on the 65th Regiment which apparently was based in Castlebar in 1844/45. It is on the 3rd column of the page under Dublin Market Note and is in relation to the number of deaths of Army Personnel locally.
Source: Castlebar Telegraph copied by the Freeman's Journal dated February 8th 1845.

Thank you McCoy, I do have a copy of that marriage there is insufficient information to be certain it is my Samuel and Mary Anne. I think there was a lots of mis truths certainly on her death certificate which states the wedding was December (23) I think 1844. Samuel died in 1874 in Melbourne but is not included on her death certificate. Samuel ans Mary Anne left shortly after that date to go to Wellington, New Zealand in which they stayed 5 years them across to Sandridge (now named Port Melbourne) Victoria.
I have found a church record for St Mary's, Cork and Ross parish for her baptism in 1828 with the surname Lucus, father John Lucas and mother Catherine Burn which seem a long way from a coincidence.
I thought if he was in the 65th regiment, he may have come to NZ as a fencible, a contract of 5 years to be on call in relation to the Taranaki wars. I can find no proof of this to date.thank you for assistance

Information re marriage date is from all the children’s birth certificates stated as 22/12/1844. The death certificate has her down as a spinster with no issue. Her son Alexander did this and I cannot fathom why? Samuel was buried with in 24 hours and they wrote on his death certificate “no particulars known”. He is buried in the Anglican section in Melbourne General Cemetery in Carlton and was not given the benefit of any rituals only witnesses. Samuel definitely was not a Fencible in New Zealand as when I visited their museum, they had a full list and his name was not on there. He was a labourer in NZ, this is supported by a jury duty list in Wellington. None of the children or grandchildren were baptised in Australia or NZ. I’m afraid I have to believe my mother telling me that her grandmother told her they were Jews. Given all the evidence and lack of evidence. I am a direct female to female descendant of Mary-anne and my maternal haplogroup would be the same as hers and it is L1b1a. This gives a clear indication that she was not of British or Irish descent. I also had my whole genome sequenced which was quite a costly exercise because DNA companies like ancestry etc only check a certain amount of your genome. This is why ethnicity results differ between companies. The full genome sequence showed that I have 12% Iberian DNA which included both Sephardic Jewish and Ashkenazi. Iberian is Spain/Portugal and North Africa. This in hand with the fact of the haplogroup probably proves that they were Jewish. 5% of Moroccan Jews have that haplogroup. It is a fact that there was a Sephardic Jewish community living in Cork from 1400’s on until about 1855 after which they disappeared through migration or intermarriage. These people were expelled or fled the inquisition and were very secretive about their true origins. There are some Catholic families living in Ireland today who know of their Jewish heritage and have spoken out about it. The Lucases like many other Jews would have used the church only for legal purposes, Jewish registration doesn’t start until 1845 in Ireland. I would recommend The Susser Archive on line for descriptions of how Jews lived during those times as it is a real eye opener. There is also a book called The Jews of Cornwall that is very good. The name Lucas is on the Sephardic name list and appears in the Inquisition records.

Another interesting fact is that Mary-Anne Lucas is an exceptionally common name and on the children’s birth certificates they crossed out Lucas and put in Lukis instead. They probably were cousins with just a variation on the spelling also common back then. There are many Lucas, Lukis and other variations of the name on Jewish Gen. Bevis Marks synagogue in London also has many Lucas’s in their registry books with very similar first names as the off spring of our Lucas
Cheers
