Hi,

I am still researching my 2nd Great Grandmother, Catherine Gorman, likely born in 1814(based on death record ). I recently found several female Gormans who are likely related.  They all were married in Aghaviller and come from Carrickshock.  I haven't found Catherine's marriage to Patrick Dalton in the NLI records, which should have occurred around 1839 or 1840.  Aghaviller records don't begin until 1847 so I was wondering if that parish didn't exist before then or that the records just don't exist.  Also, if the parish didn't exist, would they have used another parish, like Ballyhale, which is where their children are baptised, as Patrick came from Barrettstown. Thanks for any help on this.

  • Aghaviller is not listed as a seperate Catholic parish in the 1830, e.g. Lewis 1837, it's described instead as part of the Union of Knocktopher / Ballyhale. Two chapels are mentioned in Lewis, both came under Knocktopher / Ballyhale. In laster listings the civil parish of Aghaviller  is shared between the two Catholic parishes - i.e. Aghaviller & 'Ballyhale / Knocktopher'

  • Thank you for that explanation.  That is really helpful.   Another question, if I may.  Do you know if Carrickshock is an address or a town?
    Thanks again

  • 'Carrickshock Commons' is a townland consisting of a little over 47 acres in Knocktopher civil parish - see the entry for the townland on the placenames database. A townland is the smallest land division. 'Carrickshock Commons' townland is a short distance to the east of Huggintown - which is a town where one of the Catholic chapels I mentioned was located.
