I am trying to find information about the parents and/or other relatives of Michael Hogan. According to his obituary in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania newspaper, he was born in County Kilkenny in 1841 or 1842, emigrated to America in 1862, and died in Pittsburgh in December 1905. He also lived in Wales for a short time before emigrating, in Merthyr Tydfil. He is listed in the 1861 census for Wales. He married a woman he had met in Wales named Mary Sheehan, but the marriage took place in 1865 in Pittsburgh. He may be the brother of Patrick Hogan, my direct ancestor, who died in Wales in 1868. We know Patrick Hogan was born in about 1834 in Ireland but have no idea where. If Michael Hogan was indeed his brother, information about him may help us find Patrick's parents and birthplace. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I found in the 1871 census of Wales that Patrick’s widow, Ellen, living with their children as well as some others. Patrick’s oldest boy and girl were Andrew and Catherine, which were likely the names of his parents. I plugged them into rootsireland and found a baptism for a Patrick Hogan with parents Catherine ( O’)Hara and Andrew Hogan.
The Hogans lived in Grange. He was bap. in the RC parish of Mooncoin in Co. Kilkenny on 12 Mar 1832. Sponsors were Richard Hogan and Anastasia Aylward. This Patrick Hogan had 7 siblings in the database, but none called Michael.
Perhaps this will give you a lead of some kind.
Good luck.

Dear Patricia, This hint has proven spectacularly successful. The Patrick Hogan you identified from Mooncoin (baptized 12 March 1832) is now confirmed by several DNA matches to be my great-great-grandfather. Thanks so much for your help. MFKerr

It's great to get feedback like this! Thank you so much. Irish naming patterns (first son named after grandfather, etc.) can be very helpful in doing Irish genealogy, as your case proves. Thank you again.

Meant to say, "first son named after paternal grandfather."
