My family surname is "Jesse" which has always seemed odd to me for an Irish name. According to a family tree (attached), my great grandfather, Thomas L. Jesse, was born in Newcastle West about 1824. His parents, Thomas and Charlotte, took him to America in the 1836. There, Thomas L. married Maria Pickley, who had also been born in the Limerick area in 1838. Her parents, William Pickley (1815-1870) and Mary Connors (1819-1883) were also born in Newcastle West.
This information comes from various records in the U.S., but I don't think we have any records from Ireland that would either confirm these facts or expand further. Naturally, I am hoping to learn more about my own family -- and am particularly curious about the history of the "Jesse" surname, but I am also providing this information to share with anyone else who may have those names in their own families.
Thank you.
Michael Jesse

Michael:
The records for Newcastle West RC parish start in 1815 https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0891 I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find the baptismal record for Thomas Jesse. The earliest Jesse baptismal record was in 1835 for a Margaret Jess in Kilcolman and Coolcappa parish.
I located a December 11 1817 baptismal record for a William Pickley in Newcastle West RC parish father James Pickley mother Ellen Shine. Not sure that this record is for your William. I did not locate an 1834 marriage record for a William Pickley. I also did not find a baptismal record for Maria Pickley in 1838.
For Mary Connors, there is a February 20 1816 baptismal record for a Mary Conners in Newcastle West father Thomas Conners and mother Elizabeth Walsh.
Possibly Thomas Jesse was baptized in a nearby parish that no longer has records back to 1824. Same with the 1834 marriage and Maria's baptismal record unless she was born in America.
Let me know if you have any questions.

I checked the Tithe listings for Co. Limerick from the late 1820s/early 1830s and there were ten Pickley records

Hello all, and top of the mornin to ya. Today I entered the names of two of my ancestors and this site came up. I couldn't believe it. My name is Jim Jesse and I have been looking for information on those before me. In the partial family tree that was posted by Michael, I see my grandfather Frank. My dad would take us to visit him when he was in a nursing home in Oak Forest, Illinois back in the early 1950's. I have a few pictures of Frank. We attended his funeral in 1955. Now the other name John Jesse is my (James E ) fathers youngest brother.
I did a lot of research a few years back and much of what I discovered matched the stories I heard from my father. But today what brought me here was that I am planning on driving down to the Chicago area this spring to visit family graves with my eldest son Patrick. Both great grandparents Thomas and Marie are buried in Mt Olivet Cemetery on the far south side. I am still looking for the graves of others.
I hope we can stay in touch

Jim --
Sounds like we are cousins. My father was your uncle John, who I believe was the last child Catherine Cleary had before she became sick. I notice in your word document you have a couple of photos from my branch of the family. I recently posted them at http://www.michaeljesse.net/bio/start.html but you may have found them earlier from social media posts by my sister, Diane.
I never knew my father growing up, but met him once in adulthood before he died. Attached is a (poorly shot) photo from that meeting.
I did not have any information on Catherine Cleary's side of the family, so thank you for that.

Morning Mike,
A few years ago i started in Ancestory researching what there was. But I did get in contact with a Helen and I think you may know this person too. Now I met your dad a few times when he came to Chicago. All of his brothers lived in Chicago. This was back in the 1950 and early 60's. John and my dad Jim really looked alike. Now John and Jim both served in WW2. I know John served in the pacific. The oldest brother William wasn't allowed to spend time with his younger brothers. I heard his wife didn't care to much for them. But almost every Friday or Saturday night all the brothers and there wives and us kids got together. The big card game. Tom, Jim, Frank, and Bernie would consume plenty of beer and usually end up in a fight about some stupid thing. Then patch things up.
My dad told me stories about his life after he lost his mother. His dad drank a lot and couldn't care for the children. They were split up into homes and orphanages in Omaha. My dad and Frank went to Boy's Town. The stay was not long. I think my dad was maybe 12 when he and Frank ran away. They had an older sister living in Chicago. The two hopped frieght trains and traveled the road with the hobos for a while during the depression. What an adventure they had.
I never really knew how many Jesse's there are and how many other family names are intertwined to them.
Someway I will have to scan in the tree I have made so far to send to you. And I see you in it with your sister Diane.
