Born 1791 according to M record and Army records. He joined the Royal Artillery so ? probably not Roman Catholic. His parents and siblings completely unknown. Unable to find a baptism record....would one exist from this time frame? Does anyone have this surname in their family history?

Alison:
There are baptismal records for the Drumhome Church of Ireland parish on the subscription site Roots Ireland.
The earliest male baptismal record in Drumhome C of I church was for a John McCafferty in 1801. You did not mention your ancestor's given name but Roots only has two male baptismal records near 1800, the 1801 record in Drumhome and a Catholic record in 1792 for a John McCafferty in Lifford parish which is further up north in Co. Donegal.

I am descended from Mary Elizabeth McClafferty who was the daughter of James McClafferty born in Rathmullen, Donegal in 1818 who emigrated to Nova Scotia around or before 1850. I have found that McCafferty and McClafferty were sometimes transcribed incorrectly. James' brother John also emigrated about the same time. The brothers settled in Annapolis Royal and my grandmother's family eventually emigratd to the Boston Massachusetts area. Hope this helps. You will find many Donegal emigrants settled in Canada.

Thank you both Roger and Alice for your responses. Much appreciated. Patrick was his given name. The names of his children were Ann 1820, Charles Michael 1823 and Mary 1826 both in Gibraltar, James 1830, Rebecca 1831, Susan 1834 after whom my grandmother was named. We know all their details, but it might be that Patrick is a brick wall which I can't get past. Stay safe, Alison
