Hi,

I have a marriage record from the Catholic Parish register that shows Michael Coakley (Cahara) married Catherine Mahony (no place given) on 30 Jan 1858, Drimoleague, Cork. The witnesses were Denis Mahony and Patrick Coakley. I have been searching for their Civil Registration record to confirm their father's names, but no luck. I'm aware of the records destroyed in the 1922 fire.....could this be the reason I cannot locate the record or is there something else I'm not aware of? Appreciate any insight....Finally, all of their children were born in Dromore, Caheragh, Cork following 1858.

Thanks,

Carolyn

Civil registration of Roman Catholic marriages started in 1864 which explains why you were not able to find a civil record. The 1922 fire in Dublin did not affect civil BMD records.

    Roger,

I know births began in 1864, but on the Irish genealogy.ie website, it says marriage records begin in 1845. Is that incorrect information?

  • The tithe applotments show the following Coakleys in Dromore, Caheragh, in 1828:

Coakley Michael Dromore Caheragh Cork 1828
Coakley Michael Dromore Caheragh Cork 1828
Coakley Timty Dromore Caheragh Cork 1828

Perhaps one of them is the father of your Michael.

  • Eileen and Patricia,

Thanks for your replies....yes Eileen, those records are for this family...there were three more children as well; and I already have those records. I wasn't clear in my initial post because I already have Michael's father...it was a Jeremiah Coakley. I was really more interested in finding out Catherine Mahony's father...which is why I wanted to find their civil  marriage record.

    Thanks,

    Carolyn

From 1845-1863 non-Roman Catholic marriages only were civilly registered. See this link from the irishgenealogy.ie website  https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/civil-records/help/what-civil-records-…

    Roger,

Thanks for that! I did not see that asterisk, nor scroll down the page to see full explanation! That will save me a lot of futility future searching!
