Callaghans - Bawnboy, Co Cavan

I assume your Callaghans were Roman Catholic. The RC parish for Bawnboy civil parish would be Templeport. Baptismal records start in 1836. I did search the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find any baptismal records for the children you listed. Possibly they were baptized in a neighboring parish that does not have records back to the 1830s/1840s. I also looked for death records for Mary and Patrick with no success. I also did not see Patrick in the 1901 census preumably living alone. If you have any additional info please let us know.

Firstly, thank you very much for following up on my inquiry, I really appreciate your time and effort.

I know that the parents were Patrick & Mary (nee Bannon) Callaghan as their names are listed on three separate Australian death certificates for three of their children, John, Francis & Mary. What I am now uncertain of, is their town of origin in Ireland. I named Bawnboy as the town, a few years ago on Ancestry, although  I am now unable to verify where I obtained that information from as I didn't save the record. I'll continue to investigate this, as well as apply for a death certificate for son Patrick who also passed away in  1903 in the hope of extra information.  I am now wondering if there has been some sort of mix up with the death dates of Patrick Snr and son Patrick who emigrated to Australia, given that 91 years for a male would have been out of the ordinary for that time in Ireland for a male, although not unheard of. I know for sure that they were from Cavan, because even my mother knew this, having had that information passed down through the family to her, then vefified on the death certificates of Patrick Snr's children. I'll continue the search, but wanted to thank you again.

Hi Ade and Roger, I have previously on Ancestry dealt with queries on Callaghans of Templeport, including one family who went to Scotland and then Australia, also was in contact with a lady in Australia who was interested in the Templeport Callaghans, found none there but did see in an old newspaper archive reference to a lawyer Callaghan of Templeport, year 1899. Search Ancestry under Help and Message Boards, find Cavan etc it is a subscription site but this feature is I think free.

I have done my DNA and was in touch briefly with a gentleman in Sheffield who informed me that an American match to him on the line had told him it was their records or family story said the Callaghans were cattle dealers who came from Cork to Lislea in Fermanagh, now Northern Ireland but very close where they bought or leased land as much as they could, this was 1770 so would be difficult for Catholics to purchsase land. My ancestor was from the parish of Castletara, large gap in church records unfortunately, currently most Callaghans in the area are in the parish of Annagh, all these places are on the border of Cavan and Fermanagh.

There are pieces of the 1821 census for Cavan surviving but do not think Templeport is there.

Hello once again

Further to my past messages, yesterday I applied for a death certificate for the eldest son of my Irish ancestors Patrick Callaghan & Mary (Nee Bannon). Up until now I was unable to supply certainty as to the town from which they came. This morning, believe it or not, Births/Deaths?Marriages (Service NSW) had emailed me a copy of eldest son Patrick's death certificate. I am very happy to report that it provides the name of the town, from which they came, and indeed it is Bawnboy Cavan. I will attach a jpg copy of the certificate as it may assist others. I am happy to supply certificate or any information that others may have.

That death record has a lot of good family information certainly a lot more detailed than an Irish death record.

Many immigrants showed the nearest big village or town as their place of origin in Ireland so it is likely that the Callaghans lived in a townland outside the town/village of Bawnboy.
