My husband's family name is Kenny and the family tradition is that they were from County Sligo, and a James Kenny born circa 1813 moved to Bolton in Lancashire and married a Mary Howley born circa 1821 Ireland, in 1845. Their marriage record gives his father as John Kenny, farmer, and her father as Martin Howley, also a farmer. Mary's possible sister Margaret Howley born circa 1840 Ireland, was living with them in 1851 and 1861 in Bolton. Margaret Howley married a Thomas Unsworth in 1870 and her father is given as Martin Howley, a serjeant. I found a Martin Howley born circa 1790 in Castleconnor who was in various regiments between 1811 and 1829. I have no proof that this Martin is Mary and Margaret's father, or that Mary and Margaret are sisters (the 1851 census states that Margaret is a visitor and 1861 states she is a boarder). Then my husband had his DNA tested with Ancestry, and a cluster has come up with one of them having a common ancestor as James Kenny and Mary Howley, and several people matching with the names Patrick Gilgan/Gilligan and Catherine Farry, and they are from the Aughris and Templeboy area. One of the Gilgan/Farry daughters, Bridget born 1890, married a Michael J Kenny (in New York), but the DNA matches do not come through her line. Has anyone come across these families? Can anyone help?! There seem to be Kenny's everywhere in ireland, but maybe the Sligo story is true; I just can't pinpoint them!
