I am hoping someone can help me connect with my irish ancestors who immigrated to Canada in the mid-1800's.  James Barrett was born about 1822 in Ireland and his wife, Honora Malone was also born about 1822 in Ireland (though her birth year varies between about 1820 and 1826 depending on the record).  Honora's name also varies by record:  her first name has also been listed as Hanora, Hannah, Nora, Ann, etc. and her last name has also been listed as Milligan, Malane, Mallian, McLane, Millan, etc.  Not much is known about James as the only record I have for him is from the 1861 Canada census and he died shortly after that census according to Honora's obituary.

Their children were Patrick (1848 - 1885), Johanna (1850 - ), James (1852 - 1923), Edward (1853 - 1933), Michael (1854 - 1926), Anthony (1855 - ), Dennis (1856, died in infancy), Thomas (1858 - ), and John (1861 - 1930).  All of the children were born near Guelph, Canada and it is unknown whether James and Honora were married in Canada or Ireland.  After the death of James, the rest of the family moved to Iowa, USA where Honora died in 1908.  According to her obituary she was born in County Kerry but this is the only record I have that states her County of birth.

Any help connecting the Barrett family back to Ireland would be greatly appreciated!

On the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie, I located this record in Tralee. Obviously you will need additional info to confirm this record.

Have you considered a DNA test? Possibly you will have matches with 3rd or 4th cousins that may know more about where James Barrett and Honora Malone were from.

  • Roger,

Thanks for the quick reply, the record you sent looks promising and I'll try to connect the dots further.

I have taken a DNA test on Ancestry.com but none of my connections on the Barret side get me beyond James and Honora themselves.  They are my great-great-great grandparents so any relation back to someone in Ireland would be pretty remote.  Is it possible to find connections that far back through DNA?  Should I be checking my DNA against other databases?

    Thanks!

Ancestry has by far the biggest database of DNA tests but other sites susch as MyHeritage and FamilyTree DNA allow you to update your Ancestry data to their sites for free. Also, there is an independent site called Gedmatch gedmatch.com  where you can upload your Ancestry data and get matches with people who have tested with other companies and uploaded their data to Gedmatch.

If you have built and uploaded your tree to Ancestry, they have a feature called Thru Lines which gives suggestions for possible parents of your oldest ancestors in a particular line. You have to be careful. There are a lot of trees in Ancestry which have very suspect and unverified data

What I find is that most of my matches are not in Ireland but rather in the USA, Canada, Australia etc. Sometimes these matches have clues which are helpful.

As you indicated, with James and Honora, you may have reached the end of that line.
