Maher help in Ireland.
These are my g-great grandparents, Michael Maher (born Nov 1, 1821 Ireland) and Mary Hannah McGuire (born May 15, 1826 County Roscommon, Ireland). They came to America in 1850 with their children Patrick and Michael. They lived in NY and PA.
Michael's parents were possibly Thomas Maher and Mary Nealon.
Mary's parents were possibly Bernard McGuire and Mary Green.
I'm on Ancestry. Would love any suggestions on searching in Ireland.

Ulaann,
The surname "Maher" is very common in the Southern part of Ireland.
The original name was O' Meagher. The free site - www.askaboutireland.ie will give you the number of names and the counties for the period c1845 to 1860. I attach a record for a "Thomas Maher" in County Roscommon c1857. It is the only record I have found for County Roscommon.
Seeing that Michael's wife was from that County it may be a lead.
Civil records for marriages are from 1845 - Non Catholic mainly and for all other Civil records from January 1st 1864.
From experience, I have found that information from marriage and death records of families who emigrated are more likely to be found in the adopted country.
Other records are National Census 1901 and 1911 - www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy.
Regards,
McCoy

Thank you for this information. I will look on the site you have listed. I would really love to track down where they may have lived, as I will be visiting Ireland this summer! We will have half a day free before our tour starts, really hoping to meet some family or see where they lived!
Thanks again,
Ulaann
