I located the November 30 1868 civil birth record for Martin. Note father was Martin Madden and mother Mary Cannon. The townland was Derrycoosh which is the same townland in the 1901 census. Looks like Martin made himself a little older in the census (if I have the correct Martin Madden).

    See first record  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_retur…

This Martin Madden had older siblings Mary 1850 John 1852 Anne 1855 Bridget 1857 Thomas 1860 Patrick 1866 based on information in the subscription site Roots Ireland.

The question is whether the siblings stayed in Mayo or emigrated.

I did find an 1875 marriage record for Mary Madden who married a James Steward but I don't see any Stewards in the 1901 census.

    See 2nd record  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_re…

I did not see any other marriage records but will look again.

  • Hi.
Thank you for your reply. Martin married a Mary in 1897/8, but I can’t find a maiden name for her so don’t know if these are the correct siblings you have found. They had 2 children Annie born 1898 & Mary my grandmother born 1900. Sadly Martin passed & his wife married a Thomas Pennor also from derrycoosh, Cloonkeen as they moved to stockport Cheshire has they are on 1911 census with a Delilia Madden down as his stepdaughter the same as Annie & Mary age 14 so I am wondering if Delilia maybe a cousin of Annie & Mary.

Martin was married in February 1896 to Mary Pinner. His surname was shown as Maden which complicated the search process. Note his father was shown as Martin so I think the siblings I located are correct.

I located a birth record for a daughter Bridget December 19 1896. I located the entry on the subscription site Roots Ireland but I have not found the corresponding civil record image.

Also, Mary born January 1 1900 see eighth record

Did not find a record for Anne.

  • Hi.
The name Pinner comes up sometimes as Pennor, Pinnor, Penner, so Mary could be related then to her 2nd husband Thomas Pennor ? Whom she married between 1905 & 1910.
Is there any other way I can check if there is any descendent of madden still around Co Mayo.
I have a feeling that Delia or Delilia Madden could of be Bridget’s Daughter, I will check again in search. Thank you.

I looked at all the Madden marriages up to 1900 and did not see any other Madden marriage records.

I did find the death record for Mary Madden (Martin's mother) in 1902. See last record. Address was shown as Derrywash which was on a number of records. I think this is a variant for Derrycoosh.

    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu…

The 1901 census for the 30 townlands in the area near Derrycoosh showed 57 Maddens probably 8-10 families. I don't see a likely brother tp Martin in those records and as I mentioned before, there were no Steward/Stewart records. Very possible everyone emigrated.

Have you considered DNA testing? You may identify some third cousins (likely not in Ireland) on your Madden/Pinner line and maybe you can exchange notes on the connections.

This 1901 census state that Martin’s mother was 60 age, so how can she be the same woman 1902 age 80?

Legitimate question. Ages in the 1901 census for older people were almost always understated. People were not that concerned about accuracy of their age. If she had Mary in 1850, she was likely around 70. When she died in 1902, her daughter in law likely overstated her age not knowing how old her mother in law was in actuality.
