Hi everyone, I have 2 ancestral brothers Dan Seán Nora and Johnnie Seán Nora. (Dan being the oldest) I am familiar with the idea of son-father-grandfather (I.e Dan Seán Dan) however If a female name is in the mix those this always mean that Nora was potentially the GM ? And why not the father name? Was she a widow? She was of the area (husband was a 'blow-in')? Useless husband? Was Sean and Nora likely to be their parents?
Is their a typical reason for the inclusion of a female in this type of local naming?  Many Thanks Liz

  • Hi Liz,

You didn't mention the surname of the brothers.  It's possible  there were so many families with the same surname in the area--say, Sullivan--and so many Dan and John Sullivans that the locals identified them by a nickname.  If so, I'm guessing it was the names of the parents.  So: Dan, son of Nora and Sean.
