I saw in the recent FAQ posting that #8,How can I confirm if a record I have found is actually that of my ancestor? may help my search.  I found the attached on line and the date corresponds to my ancestor, Robert Barry's birth.  I can trace his arrival in New York to the ship Dalmarnock on 10 May 1836 but the arrival record only lists his nationality and not his address in Ireland.  If anyone has any information that might help me corroborate I would appreciate hearing.  Interestingly he seems to have travelled with his three year old son, also Robert, but no reference to a wife.

I should add that I have taken a YDNA test with FamilyTree DNA but there have so far been no close matches to anyone with the surname Barry.

  • Hi, Just checking to see whether you have traced both Roberts in the U.S. censuses. Names of spouses and children? Also have you seen their church and civil records, headstones, interment lists, obituaries, etc.? If not, these might provide some clues to the place of origin in Ireland.

It doesn't seem possible to confirm that baptismal record you provided with the information you have.

    I hope this helps.

  • Thanks for the reply and suggestions, Patricia.  I confirmed that Robert (Sr) is my direct ancestor by reviewing New York and US censuses.  Some of my Barry ancestors are buied in New York and I've visited the cemetary from whence I got the grave locations.  Unfortunately there are no markers on the graves so no further information there.  The 1855 census shows the two Roberts, Robert Sr's wife, Ellen, and four other children ranging in age from 13 to 3 years old.  Robert Sr and his wife, Ellen, were 42 years old and Robert Jr was 23 years old.  The three born in Ireland had been in the States for 19 years according to census records.  Interestingly, due to the difference in official census date and the date the enumerator logged the data, Robert was still alive on the official date but died before the data was collected so he still shows as living!  I lost track of Robert (Jr) and, in any event he is not a direct ancestor. He was still living with hs mother in the 1860 census.  Another son, William Robert born in 1844 and  brother to Robert Jr, was my great grandfather.  The elder Robert was killed in an accident in New York in 1855.  His son, William died in Connecticut in 1891.  My grandfather, William Francis, born in 1883 was only seven years old when his father died.  I have constructed a family tree on WikiTree that has all this information.

I am disappointed that the trail goes cold prior to their arrival in New York in 1836.  Although I can speculate a couple of generations back from there I cannot confirm any of the information.

If anyone on the forum has any other suggestions I would be grateful to receive them.

    Thanks again,

    Bill

  • Bill, Did the cemetery provide  the interment list? It usually lists everyone in the grave, age, birth country, date of burial. You could also get info about who bought the grave and when.

  • Thanks again, Patricia. Yes, the grave was purchased by Robert (son) after his father's tragic and sudden death. Other members of his family are buried there as well but no leads to their past unfortunately. I'm attaching the newspaper article of his accident.

  • I don't believe you can say for sure that the bap cert refers to you ancestor. Robert Barry was a common name. There are also a good number of Robert Barrys with father Robert shown in baptisms on RootsIreland, so we can't identify either Robert there.

It sounds like you have done a lot of research.  Still, just in case you haven't, I'd suggest looking at all of the vital and church records for your Robert's children. These may state their father's place of origin.

Another source: obituaries for Robert and children.

    Good luck!

  • Hi Bill, I believe this is your William's baptismal record, found on FindMyPast. His mother was Ellen HURLEY. I looked for a marriage in Ireland for Robt. Barry and Ellen Hurley, with no findings. I didn't find one at FindMyPast either.

Thanks again, Patricia.  I didn't know William Robert's parish in NYC so that's good information to have.  I have a record of three year old Robert Barry on the Dalmarnock accompanied by a "Mary Ellen M" if I can read the card correctly.  It's interesting that the 1855 census record shows Robert and Ellen Barry, each 42 years old and children, Robert 23, Ellen 13, William 11, Denis 7 and Hannah 3 so there's a ten year gap between son Robert and his next oldest sibling!

Patricia, I did find this record of marriage between a Robert Barry and Ellen Hurly (sic) in Innishannon parish on 16 February 1830. The date is reasonable enough to be the one for my ancestors although if born in 1813, Robert would have been only 16 or 17 years old at the time!
