I am trying to locate the grave of my great uncle who passed away aged three months in the January of 1894.
Alfred Hart was born on the 15th of October 1893 to Emmeline Hart (Nee Gittins) and Henry Hart, a soldier at the Fermoy Barracks. I have obtained a date for Alfred's baptism, 15th of December 1893, from Reverend Paulsen at Christ Church but sadly there was no record of a burial having taken place. I don't believe the family took baby Alfred to England to be buried as his brother William, my grandfather ,was born in Fermoy in the December of 1894. I believe baby Alfred could be buried in the military cemetery in Fermoy but am unable to find any records online. I was hoping someone may be able to help me confirm that my relative is buried in the cemetery, and more importantly, locate his actual grave.

Justin,
I checked previously about records for the Military Cemetery and I don't think there are any written records. Headstones are the only records for that cemetery as far as I know. I dont't think the headstone records are transcribed anywhere, but I will ask. Additionally, I don't think there are many headstones there so I can have a look around if the transcriptiopns are not transcribed. I will get backk to you on this.
Best wishes, Kieran

Hello Kieran . I wasn’t expecting such a generous offer of help and such a prompt reply. Ever since I came across Great uncle Albert’s exsistence quite by chance through the 1911 census, I have been eager to ‘reclaim’ him. For over half a century the poor child has been quite forgotten but I aim to change that. Any help you can afford me will be worth more to me than gold. If it is of any help Albert passed on the 24th of January 1894. I believe there may be two military cemeteries in Fermoy. With thanks, Justin

Justin,
Yes, there are two cemeteries in Fermoy where there are military burials. Beechfield cemetery and the Military cemetery. Beechfield cemetery is a shared cemetery with civilians. A number of years ago most of the headstones were removed from their locations and placed against the wall (see attached photograph). As a result, it is not possible to identify the location of graves. It is very unlikely that Alfred Hart was buried in that cemetery in 1894. Beechfield cemetery would have been used by the military earlier than that.
The other cemetery is called the Military Cemetery (see attached photo) and is closer to where the military barracks was. It is not shown on Google maps but I can scan an old map for you if you want. This is the most likely burial place of Alfred Hart.
There are no burial records for the cemetery. However, the inscriptions on headstones were recorded a number of years ago. The headstone inscriptions of officers and other ranks and members of their families who died and were buried with a headstone in all cemeteries around Fermoy were recorded. There is only one record for Hart – that of a son of Major Henry George Hart who died in 1850 aged 12. That headstone is in Castlehyde cemetery.
Alfred Hart is probably buried in the Military Cemetery, but I don’t think it will be possible to identify the location.
Best wishes, Kieran
