  • Ann,

After Bernard’s death in 1882, the farm seems to have passed to his son Bernard (who married Ellen Morgan in 1900):

I don't see Daniel in the area in the 1901 census, nor can I see a local marriage for him. Looks as though he probably moved away.

  • If you have access to Ancestry, you'll find a Daniel Rooney, born in N. Ireland c1868, lviing in Brooklyn in the censuses from 1915 on; he died in 1943.  Perhaps this is the Daniel you are seeking?

  • Ann,

Griffiths Valuation only has the one Bernard Rooney in Ballyvally, and you can see from the marriage certificate that he appears to have had a son named Bernard.

    1901 census:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Down/Upper_Clonallan/Ballyvalley/1250340/

    1911 census:

They didn’t have any children. There were numerous Rooney households in Ballyvally but I don’t see any other Bernards around in 1901.

  • Wow... so much to digest.....so based on Bernards age in the 1901 census he was born about 1855 which is about 7 years before Patrick. Birth records from that early are almost nonexixtant .....any ideas where I can start the search??

    Thanks,

    Ann

  • Ann,

Statutory birth registration didn’t start till 1864 so you won't find a birth certificate for Bernard born c 1854. However Clonallan RC baptism records start in 1826, so should include 1854. Have you searched then? They are on the rootsireland site (subscription) and also the nli site where they are available free:

    https://registers.nli.ie

People didn’t celebrate birthdays in Ireland in the 1800s and so tended to guess their ages. Search 5 years either side of 1854 would be my advice.

  • Ann,

The marriage certificate for 10.7.1900 shows a Bernard Rooney of Ballyvalley (widower) marrying Ellen Morgan. His father is named as Bernard Rooney, farmer. So that indicates Bernard senior had a son also named Bernard.

That Bernard’s first marriage was in 1880 to Bridget Mullan, and again his townland was Ballyvally and his father is named as Bernard Rooney, farmer.

You mention that Bernard had a middle name Owen. People didn’t both much with middle names in Ireland in the 1800s, and most didn’t have one. Even if they did, it’s rare to see them on any official documents such as baptism or marriage records. (In the 8 marriages shown in the links to the 1880 & 1900 Bernard marriages, there’s just one middle name out of 32 names, including the witnesses).
