Looking for information on Thomas E. Cannon born in Ireland circa 1830 and/or  Catherine McNiece born Ireland, circa 1832. Both emmigrated to USA sometime before 1955. Once in the USA they married  and had first son, Thomas Edwin Cannon in 1855 in Tarrytown, New York. Anecdotally, a story was told that he went to a wedding and the groom didn't show so he married her (or vice versa). Following that they ended up in Minnesota with 9 more children.

Have seen a few possible birth/baptism records but haven't seen anything I can use to conclusively tie back to families of origin in Ireland.

I am visiting Dublin and West Coast first week of October, 2022.

Attached photos  of the Catherine that I'm looking for, and their first son Thomas (bortn 1855)which was taken in his 60s.

I assume Thomas Cannon and Catherine McNiece were Roman Catholic?

Without knowing the names of the parents of Thomas and Catherine, it will be difficult to confirm any records we might locate. In addition, many parishes in the west of Ireland do not have records back to the 1830s. The surname Cannon is very common in Co. Donegal and there are very few RC records available for Co. Donegal pre-1850.

I went to Ancestry.com  and there were a number of family trees for this family. Most of the trees have Catherine McNiece born May 27 1832 in Co. Roscommon to father John McNiece and Catherine (no maiden name). I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find this record. There was no information where in Ireland Thomas Cannon was from.

The other issue is whether the surname was Cannon or Concannon.

If you have acccess to Ancestry you may want to review those trees that have your family.

  • FindMyPast has Thomas Jr.'s baptismal record from 1855. Sponsors were John Concannon and Ellen Gorman. Perhaps these names might assist you in your research.

If possible, examine the birth and baptismal records for each of Thomas/Catherine's children.  Sometimes the place of origin for the parents is mentioned.

Also, if you can locate their marriage record, that might have the place of origin.

And headstones and obituaries might have the native place as well.

I hope this is helpful. Have a great trip.
