Hello!  I have Patrick McGovern born c1815 Killinagh, Cavan (apparently near Enniskillen). I have his military record and his movements, children, etc. after he joined the army in Glasgow.

My question relates to his parents. On his marriage certificate they are given as James McGovern and Mary FOUSY.

There was a James McGovern farming in the Townland of Port, but I assume that James McGoverns were not exactly thin on the ground in Killinagh.

I can find no Fousy name in Cavan. I have a few matches with names like Fauci and Fosse, but not enough to make any connection obvious. I did see a couple of similar names in Roscommon when I widened my search.

My Patrick was literate so I assume that his mother's surname at least sounded like Fousy. Can anyone suggest how I can confirm Mary Fousy's name? Has anyone heard of it in Cavan?

I have attached a snip with part of the marriage record (and yes, I have tried Foury and considered that the 'F' could be a 'T' and looked at Tonry, even Terrry).  Help!!

Thank you
Lee

  • Here are some names prevalent in Cavan in 1796...

https://www.failteromhat.com/flax/cavan.htm Maybe you can match up a surname with Mary's.

Looking at some of the other words on the page you sent, I think that what you thought was "u" might be "n."

  • Patricia, that is an interesting list of names.  May I ask, what is the source?  What does that list represent?  Many thanks.
