Many thanks Roger for the link to the Workhouse document - very interesting reading.

The reason I asked my question is because I have found a death certificate for someone who may be my great great grandfather. He died in Castlerea Workhouse in 1881 of "Debility, one year certified".

His death cert notes that he was married and I know he had two living daughters, one of whom became my great grandmother. I was trying to understand why he was in the workhouse but the rest of his family were not. 

Clearly this is one of those puzzles that I might never solve- the joy of genealogy research.

I forgot to clarify that workhouses had "hospital" facilities and the sick went there for treatment and many died at the workhouse.

As I said in my previous post I couldn't figure out why this man was in the workhouse when he had a family. I know there may have been other circumstances around this but I think I prefer the idea that he was ill and was treated there.

Can I just say that you are a mine of information Roger and I have learned so much from this site - thank you again.

I'm not sure if your Castlemore address relates to Ballaghaderreen? I had a great great grandmother from Castlemore, Ballaghaderreen and that will be another trail for me to follow soon.

My grandmother, Nora Roddy, was born in a townland a mile outside of Ballaghaderreen in 1889. Nora emigrated to Philadelphia in 1906. I grew up in Philadelphia but now live in Maryland. Let me know if you need any assistance.
