Hi,
I am trying to piece together some possible siblings of my third great grandfather, Jeremiah Coakley (Abt. 1794) in Dromore, Caheragh, Cork. There is a Griffith's Valuation record from 1853 for a Jeremiah, Michael, and Timothy in Dromore. Jeremiah had sons also named Michael and Timothy, born between 1813 to 1828. I want to know if the valuation record is more likely for his brothers or his sons? I have seen an explanation of how to read such records, but it did not address what approximate age of the tenant. Is is more likely a tenant was 59-60 years old or 40-50? Perhaps there is no way to confirm this, but I just thought I'd ask.
I should add that there is a tithe applotment record for a Michael Coakley in Dromore, 1828......maybe this could be Jeremiah's father??
Thanks!
Carolyn

Hi Carolyn,
I searched through the early Census records no results, sorry.
In the Tithe records there is a Timothy and Michael listed. These must be Jeremiah's brothers.
The Tithe Applotment Books, 1823-37 (nationalarchives.ie)
Civil records are from 1864. Not many Death records were listed in the Church Parish books.Have you used...marriages from 1840/4 you may find records there. Births up to 1919/20.

Margot,
Thanks for the link to the tithe applotment books...I looked earlier, but could not find Timothy's. Now I see where his name was written "Timty".
This helps me narrow down things, and I believe that Timothy is the father to Jeremiah because Jeremiah named his first son Timothy....going off the naming conventions here.
Those marriage records in the 1840s will help me with Jeremiah's children, so thanks for that.
I am still uncertain regarding the Griffith's records though.....maybe someone else will chime in here!

If you find marriages they usually state if the Father is deceased, which does help.
When seraching the records use thing like * and %
In the Tithe and the rest of that site, I use Tim* as it bings up any spelling.
Some sites use % tim %
Some sites you need to put a , between each word.
(It means anything related to)
In the Tithe records, there are Jer* Coakley but
You have the townland/parish as this
Dromore Townland, Co. Cork (townlands.ie)This is Jer* if you view the map Dromore is just outside the area.
The Tithe Applotment Books, 1823-37 (nationalarchives.ie)The entry for Pluckanes (townland is a different family) I searched their tree and the names for the borther are different. There again they may have got it wrong or me.
Timty did you look at the actual record? It is Tim and the ditto is a squiggle.
004587410/004587410_00158.pdf (nationalarchives.ie)In the Tithe's if the year box is blank it's 1823.
I did change a record yesterday as it was blank Coakley when I saw the actual record it was Widow. This doesn't help you but it's something to lok out for.
