Hi Can anyone help please with 3 queries. 1. Derreenmore townland is present in Ardcarn on Tithes 1834 with 4 occupants (incl Thomas Boyd and Thomas Gallagher). The name has disappeared by Griffiths. What was its replacement name? And did it border the parish of Killukin? 2. I've been searching for a Boyd Gallagher marriage. I have found 6 children of Thomas Boyd and Maria Gallagher all baptised on Killukin NLI records from 1837 to 1846 ( though I can't seem to find the 6th, Eleanor bap 18.4.1846 on NLI... can anyone spot that one?) 3. A Google search throws up a Rootsweb page stating that Thomas Boyd and Maria Gallagher were married on 12 June 1836 at the Catholic Church of Killukin, Ardcarn!!! I can find no tecord on either Ardcarn or Killukin NLI. Is there anywhere else to look? This Rootsweb page also states that Maria Gallagher was from Derreenmore, lists her siblings, and implies her parents were Thomas and Elizabeth Gallagher. The reason for this is I'm trying to track down Jane Boyd who married William O'Hara of Glooria Ardcarn. A William O'Hara and a Jane Boyd were sponsors to Thomas Boyd and Maria Gallagher's son William (1837) and a Laurence O'Hara (poss Wm's brother) was sponsor to another son Robert (1840). Thank you for all your help. Fionn Lawlor

  • Hi Fionn!

    A few comments.

I located seven children on the subscription site Roots Ireland including twins Eleanor and Patrick in 1846 See parish register

    Eleanor and Patrick April 18 1846   https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000633945#page/138/mode/1up

I did not find the June 12 1836 marriage of Thomas Boyd and Marie Gallagher on the Killukin parish register.

I can't make an accurate determination on the successor official townland for Derreenmore. My best guess would be Drumsillagh or Knockadaff but neither is in the southern part of Ardcarn parish on the border with Killukin parish.

  • Thank you Roger for finding the twins - I had Patrick estimated as born a year later.
On the Tithes there is a Derreenbeg (1 occupant) as well as Derreenmore (both Ardcarne) and I wondered if they amalgamated to Derreen. On leitrim-roscommon.com/MAPS for the map of the Catholic Parish of Cootehall, Derreen is mapped in the neighbouring parish of Tumna and is separated by one townland from Glooria (Ardcarne) where Wm O'Hara & his wife Jane Boyd lived. That would solve the proximity of Wm knowing Th Boyd and consequently being a sponsor at a Boyd baptism.
However it's then a mystery as to why all the Boyd children were baptised in Killukin NLI which doesn't seem anywhere near Derreen (Tumna).
Or this mysterious marriage of the parents Th Boyd and Maria Gallagher. In any event I've now discovered that in the late 1840s, Th Boyd and his family, and Maria Gallagher's siblings and parents all emigrated to Wisconsin.
I'm fairly sure that Thomas Boyd born c 1807 may have been a younger brother of Jane O'Hara.
    Thanks again Roger.

Hi Fionn, on your third question, Jane Boyd/Boyde is my great great great grandmother. She died in Glooria on 7th December 1879, aged 81, per the informant, Rodger O'Hara, possibly, her youngest son who died in Cloongreaghan, Cootehall, on 24th Feb 1928, aged 84. Jane's husband, William, is my great great great grandfather. He died in Glooria on 18th May 1872, aged 75, per the informant, Honora Boland, who was from Glooria. If needed, I can supply additonal information about the descendants of Jane and William. I don't have any additional information about Jane or her parents although family historians believe Jane's family probably descended from Scottish settlers. Regards, Gabriel

  • Hi Gabriel/4th cousin
I have lots of info on Jane Boyd & Wm O'Hara (my auntie Sr Pauline Lavin had done a fantastic handwritten family tree back in the 1980s), but I was trying to ascertain the Scottish connection. No closer on that one, though some of Jane's children & grandchildren went by Scottish forenames.
You may be familiar with these two family sites, but I'll put them on here for other interested parties...
    leitrim-roscommon.com/lavin
    and
    helensfamilytrees.com
The former has loads of info the Lavins, Callerys and O'Haras, though with new genealogy research, there are people who could be added there.
Helen has >20,000 names on her website, half of which spring from her husband's O'Hara ancestors. It's constantly getting added to... only last week I found a possible daughter Jane to Jane Boyd & Wm O'Hara. This Jane married John McGarry 26.7.1860, Ardcarn, witness Jane Boyd. A son Michael McGarry was baptised 6.7.1860, Ardcarne, sp Jane Boyd. I haven't followed through on Michael yet.
I was also trying to trace Honoria Boland, the informant at Wm O'Hara's death, in case she was a daughter/sister/sister-in-law. The only Boland connection was that Jane & Wm's grandson Farrell McLoughlin (mother Mary) who married Margaret Boland 10.2.1890, Cootehall, some 18 yrs later... but I haven't found Margaret's bap record.
Who are you descended from? I come down from Jane & Wm's son Laurence O'Hara who married Catherine Mulloy.
I'm on fionnstar@talktalk.net if you want to continue this chat.
Thanks for responding. Always great to find a new cousin.
IrelandXO is a fab website. Thank you to all the volunteers, especially Roger.

  • Greetings Cousin Fionn, thanks for the additional information. I've been through the resources you mention plus a host of others, in particular, Patrick Lavin's scholarly "Ancestral Quest .... ". Lots of additional questions to ponder though and I'd be delighted to pursue these with you offline. I've sent some initial comments to your email address. My great great grandfather, William O'Hara was a younger brother of Laurence (sp Catherine Mulloy). William married Jane Bambrick in Cootehall in Feb 1855.  He died aged 89 on 6th Jan 1916.
