I am trying to determine exactly where my great grandfather, Patrick Hickey's (born Ballylongford 1859, died Brooklyn 1927) actually resided. I have researched amny records for the family of his parents, Edmund Hickey and Hannah Curnane, his grandparents, Patrick Hickey and Johanna McElligot, and his sister, Margaret Hickey and her husband, Michael Broder (Broderick). The vast majority of records go back and forth between Cloonaman and Kilelton. (My Hickeys/Hickies were not the landlord Hickie family of Kilelton House but were their tenants.

Because Patrick's father, Edmund, was recorded as a fisherman and a boatman, I thought residence nearest to the Shannon shoreline might be logical.

I am just wondering whether the records suggest movement back and forth between Kilelton and Cloonaman, which I know adjoin each other. Or is it possible that they always resided in the one townland close by the boundary of the other townland and recordkeepest confused them? Or because they were tenants of the Kilelton Hickies, record keepers just wrote down Kilelton as their address.

Anyway, I just thought some local folks might have observations. I have made a list of records that I know pertain to my family. Please see below and thank you for any observations.

These Hickeys/Hickies (my family) and Broders were tenants on the estate of William Hickie of Kilelton House and were unlikely to have been related to their Hickie landlords.

The addresses for my Hickey family members seem to go back and forth between the townlands of Cloonaman and Kilelton for a period of over 90 years, save for two early records - one for Rushy Park in the Tithe Aplotments (possibly the right family) and the other Asdee (definitely the correct family). My Patrick Hickey is listed in Griffiths Valuations as resident in a house without land at Cloonaman. This could be consistent with a landless laborer whose son, Edmund, is subsequently listed in various records as a fisherman, boatman and laborer. Patrick Hickey’s enumeration of 4Bi in Cloonaman has been difficult to coordinate with surviving Ordinance Survey maps.

Several years ago, Michael Lynch of the Kerry County Library generously took a look at the GV and the Ordinance Survey maps and suggested that it looked to him that the original assigned numbers might have been renumbered and that the correct location of the Hickey house might be along the road between Asdee and Ballylongford. On the other hand folks from the LGMA.ie did not see it the same way.

I suppose what I’m looking for it is a local or expert opinion in terms of Ballylongford as to whether based upon the above records it likely that my family was moving back and forth between Kilelton and Cloonaman or perhaps lived in one or the other townland close to the border with the other townland, hence uncertainty in terms of record keeping with the correct address and that in actuality they were actually residing in one place.

  • Edward,

Before about 1840, townlands had undefined boundaries and people living on the border of two townlands could recognise themselves as being in one townland while officially being in the neighbouring townland. This situation has continued even to the present day. My neighbours give their address as one townland but are actually in a different townland. This would have occurred more frequently in the 1800s.

When trying to locate an exact location of where a family lived, Griffith's Valuation can, in some cases, be inaccurate. In that instance, I have found that the 'cancelled books' at the Valuation Office can be more accurate. These are records of land occupation/ownership, and the changes in occupation/ownership, from about 1860 to 1970. They are not online at present, but may be in the future.

It looks like you are dealing with a few families so it is possible that they were neighbours in different townlands. It is very unlikely that a family moved back and forth between townlands.

    Best wishes, Kieran
