Hugh married Jane in 1852 in Annclone in County Down. Hugh's father is listed as Patrick McArdle and his mother as Ann Keenan. They had 3 or more children in the parish and then moved to Port Glasgow in Scotland in the early 1860's where they lived out their lives.
I'm trying to find out if Hugh originally came from the area of Annaclone and County Down and if he had siblings and their descendents.
I know Jane came from County Tyronne and I have details of herfamily. So how did they meet and what led them to Annaclone?
I cant find any records of Patrick McArdle or Ann Keenan or any other children born to them.
Can anyone help?
Meggie

A transcription of Hugh McCardle/Jane O’Neill’s marriage record on rootsireland.ie notes they married 5-Feb-1852 in Co. Down in the Catholic parish of Banbridge. Both of them lived in the townland of Ballybrick. Witnesses were Daniel Fegan, Anne O’Neill. Church was Annaghlone RC.
I found three children for this couple, all baptized in Annaghlone.
Mccardle Patrick 1852 Co. Down
Mccardle Bernard 1854 Co. Down
Mccardle Margaret 1861 Co. DownPatricia

Hi Patricia, Thank you for this- I really appreciate the effort to help me.
All three children you listed came with Hugh and Jane to Scotland. Patrick lived into his 90's, Bernard died as an adult in Canada and Margaret died as a child. I'm descended from their son James who was born in Scotland. He was my G grandfather.
It was Hugh's father, mother and any siblings I was hoping to trace. I don't know if Hugh was orginally from this area or not? Particularly as his wife Jane was from County Tyronne. Her maiden name was O'Neill so I'm guessing her witness was a relation of hers. As far as I can find out she didn't have a sister. Two brothers, Thomas and Bernard. Thomas went to New Zealand and Im not too sure about Bernard.
I wondered if Patrick McArdle, Hugh's father might have been buried in a cemetary local to Annaclone or if there were any records of his parents having more children either in Annaclone or nearby I've also never found a birth entry for Hugh. I believe his mother Ann nee Keenan came to Scotland with the family and she died there.

--I looked at records on RootsIreland, but I could not see Hugh's baptism nor baptisms of any other children of Patrick and Ann.--There are baptismal records for children of a Patrick McArdle and Ann Keenan in Co. Louth from the 1850s to 1870s. It seems impossible that these are Hugh's parents. Hugh was probably born around 1830.
I don't know if Hugh was orginally from this area or not?
--He was living in Ballybrick townland in Down when he got married, as was his wife Jane. Not sure where you got the record saying she was from Tyrone?
--Keep in mind that in the 1840s/50s, a great number of people were farmers and lived their whole life on the family farm or a farm they married in to. Transportation was by animal and cart, or by horse. It was not common for people to move far from where they originally lived--except, of course, if they emigrated. It is likely Hugh was born in or near Ballybrick.Particularly as his wife Jane was from County Tyronne. Her maiden name was O'Neill so I'm guessing her witness was a relation of hers. As far as I can find out she didn't have a sister. Two brothers, Thomas and Bernard. Thomas went to New Zealand and Im not too sure about Bernard.
--Yes, the O'Neill witness was very likely a relative. Usually the sponsors were siblings.I wondered if Patrick McArdle, Hugh's father might have been buried in a cemetary local to Annaclone or if there were any records of his parents having more children either in Annaclone or nearby I've also never found a birth entry for Hugh.
--There would be no birth record, only a baptismal record. I'm not sure if records exist for his area; maybe one of the volunteers might clarify this.
--If Patrick died after 1864, there would be a death record at irishgenealogy.ie. And yes, he would likely be buried in the Annaghclone cemetery.I believe his mother Ann nee Keenan came to Scotland with the family and she died there.
--Have you seen her obituary, death certificate, headstone inscription? These may shed light on the family.I hope this helps.

Hello again,
If you go to askaboutireland and click on Griffith's Valuation, you can see that in 1863 there were several households in Ballybrick headed by men named NEIL. These would likely be relatives of Jane O'Neil. Recall that when Hugh McArdle married Jane, they both gave Ballybrick as their home address. I didn't see any McArdles living in this townland.

Hi Patricia
Thanks again.
Jane was born 13 Aug 1831 in Clonoe Co. Tyronne to Thomas O'Neill and Isabella Campbell. I've never really known why she (they) was in Ballybrick/Annaclone other than a wild guess of perhaps she was sent away to live with extended family as she was expecting a child. She and Patrick married 5 Feb 1852 and their son Patrick is listed as being born/baptised 21st March 1852- only a month after the marriage- all in Annaclone.
It still doesn't help me track Hugh's birth or his parents down.
From the 1871 Scottish Census there is a woman called Ann McArdle aged 69 living with Hugh and Jane. her place of birth is listed as Ireland and she is a laundress. It is documented that she is Hugh's mother.
I have a death entry for Ann McArdle in 1882 in Port Glasgow where the family lived. She is listed as the 'wife' of Hugh McArdle. Registration was by her 'son' Bernard McArdle. My Ann had a grandson called Bernard McArdle so I think it is her. It lists a maiden name as Hurl not Keenan. However Hugh's death certficate lists his parents as Patrick McArdle and Ann Keenan.
Thanks
Meggie
