After postponing my trip for 2 years (thanks COVID) I am finally making my first visit to Ireland. I have traced my great grandmother to Castleisland, where she married in 1854 and baptised 6 children between 1855 and 1867. Her name was Margaret Culloty, which I understand is a last name found almost exclusively in County Kerry. I will be in Castleisland from May 19 to 25. I want to see where my ancestress came from and perhaps further the climb up my family tree. Ideas and suggestions of things to see and do are greatly appreciated.

Hi, If her name is Margaret Culloty, who did she marry?

Why not send a message to the Castelisland district heritage center at https://www.facebook.com/castleislanddistrictheritage/? Perhaps someone who knows the local history might be of assistance. Good luck!

Patricia, many thanks for all the suggestions. I appreciate it.
Margot, Margaret Culloty married Michael Casey. I found both the marriage and the baptism of the children in the Castleisland register of the RC Church. I haven't yet been able to get further back than that.

The tithe records (1823 to 1837) show....Culloty in County Kerry and County Cork.
The Tithe Applotment Books, 1823-37 (nationalarchives.ie)
The Kerry area....
Annaghbeg Townland, Co. Kerry (townlands.ie)Casey in Castleisland, County Kerry
The Tithe Applotment Books, 1823-37 (nationalarchives.ie)You would need to know Michael and Margaret's fathers Christian names.
The marriage isn't listed in the Civil records, these records were from 1844., this would have given their fathers names and townland names.
There is a family of Culloty in the 1901 census, Main Street, Castleisland, the page wanted to see id not listed, it wold have pinpointed the house.
The Annaghbeg townland in the tithe records, there is a Daniel Culloty in the 1901 census

Patricia, great suggestion. I'll check out that Facebook page.
Margot, great leads! I'll definitely be looking at those records. I do have both Margaret's and Michael's fathers' names (I think). There are men of the same last names listed as witnesses to the marriage.
I thank the both of you for your assistance!

Hi Nola,
I have taken a look at any records that mention your ancestors. I think that you are correct in surmising that Margaret and Michael's fathers' names were Eugene Culloty and John Casey as both of these were witnesses to their marriage. We cannot say this definitively as Civil Records for R.C. births, marriages and deaths are only available from 1864 and the couple married in 1854. If the fathers were dead when they married, brothers or uncles might have acted as witnesses.
I did find the Civil birth records of Margaret and Michael's children Eugene and Margaret. I'm not sure if you've been able to access these records but from them we learn that Michael worked as a carpenter.

I was unable to find any other relatives that might have remained in Ireland after they emigrated. I did find a Civil death record for a Eugene Culloty who may have been Margaret's father.

I also found a Civil death record for a woman that might have been her mother Mary.

I'm afraid I was unable to find any graves that I could link to your Caseys or Cullotys.
I hope this helps.
Every good wish,
Joan

Joan,
Many thanks. I had found Eugene and Margaret's civil birth records, and wondered why the previous children were not recorded. As I'm up to my eyeballs getting ready for my trip to Ireland next week I haven't yet followed your leads on Margaret's parents, but I will. Thank you ever so much.
Best wishes,
Donna
