My father was born in 1912 in the Republic. We have no information about his parents or ltheir location. He was raised by another family, very likely on a paid basis, but again we have no information on them or their location. I am trying to trace his roots, and possibly living relives, through the usual genealogy sites etc. What we have is a precise date of birth for him and his surname. I understand that his birth should have been registered but, assuming there are ways of disguising identity, I wonder though how much reliance to place on either of these facts? Any insights others might have on this would be very welcome! Thanks.

Hi,
what was your father's name? his birthdate?
Thanks.

Thanks Patricia. John Joseph Walshe, born 29 March 1912. I have found a John Joseph Walshe in Corlican on the 1911 census, but who is 14 months younger than my father. I know his surname is common. I'd be really interested to know if, to your knowledge, where the child is illegitimate and if the family wanted to hide the connection, the birth date and/or surname can be relied upon. Many thanks for your help and interest.

Hiya.
I found a birth record for John Walsh born on 29 March 1912 whose Mother's name is Mary Walsh but no father is listed. I've attached the extract here - the writing is a bit hard to read so I'll let you try and decipher it!
Good luck!

There's a brilliant website https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ and it is free to use, you don't even have to sign up.
It has civil and church records (only for a couple of parishes though, Dublin is one).
Using the Census information, I spent hours on that site and found a wealth of information, it's very easy to get lost in there!
Good luck with your search, happy to help if you need it.
